He is the son of Scott Wade, a former Australian rules footballer who played for Hawthorn in the Victorian Football League (VFL), for Clarence and Hobart in the Tasmanian Football League (TFL), and later served as the CEO at AFL Tasmania. His grandfather, Michael Wade, was the president of the Hobart Football Club. Wade is related to Jeremy Howe, who currently acts as a defender for the Collingwood Football Club.
During his youth, Wade was a representative for Tasmania in junior cricket and football. During the 2006-07 season in the Ford Ranger ODI series, Wade gained recognition with Tasmania, although he only participated in one match for his home team.
