Design

Having assessed multiple slim and lightweight laptops, I believe the design of the Yoga Slim 7i sets a benchmark that others will need to exceed. This laptop seamlessly merges practicality with elegance. Although it may appear like a standard business notebook initially, a more detailed observation unveils its sophisticated allure, accentuated by a premium all-metal chassis.

The laptop also includes curved edges, reminiscent of the design seen in the Dell Inspiron 14 Plus and the HP Envy 14 x360. This design element enhances the laptop’s ‘Slim’ image, giving it an even more streamlined look. As a result, the laptop is only 0.59 inches thick and weighs a mere 1.39kg, ensuring that it won’t be a burden to carry around.

The laptop is very durable, with a sturdy frame that remains silent when opening the lid or placing hands on the keyboard deck. There is no bending or flexing when pressure is applied to the edges or center of the keyboard deck. Additionally, it has undergone testing according to the MIL-STD-810H standard, reinforcing its durability. The Yoga Slim 7i comes in Luna Grey, which has a matte finish and is not prone to fingerprints. However, compared to the vibrant Navy Blue color option of the Envy 14 x360, Luna Grey may seem a bit dull.

Display And Audio

The 1200P screen on the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i may not be the most advanced compared to other models, but it remains remarkably impressive. With pixels densely distributed on a 14-inch screen, the sharpness is quite satisfactory. Moreover, this OLED display enhances colors, making them vibrant, while delivering deep blacks for an enhanced movie-watching experience.

The screen can achieve a maximum HDR brightness of 500 nits, allowing for comfortable usage of the laptop outside or in brightly lit environments. Surprisingly, I seldom increased the brightness beyond 60 percent due to finding the screen excessively bright. Furthermore, the display is highly accurate in color reproduction, encompassing the full DCI-P3 color spectrum. This makes the laptop suitable for tasks like editing photos and videos with precise color grading.

The screen is bordered by narrow bezels that don’t stick out like a sore thumb when viewing content either. The display’s 16:10 aspect ratio also makes reading articles and sifting through long PDFs a treat. It’s not all roses, though, as the display refreshes at just 60Hz. As such, jumping to the Yoga Slim 7i felt a tad jarring, given how I’m surrounded by HRR screens.

I have gotten acclimated to the display since then, but I do wish the company would’ve offered a 90Hz or a 120Hz display with the laptop. The laptop comes with four top-firing speakers for audio. These speakers produce high volume, eliminating the need to replay scenes due to unclear dialogue. Additionally, they provide a broad soundstage and deliver rich, layered audio rather than a hollow, dull sound.

Ports And I/O

The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i impressively includes a good variety of ports for its size. On the left side, it has two Thunderbolt 4 Type-C ports and an HDMI 2.1 connector, while the right side has a USB 3.2 Type-A port and a 3.5mm combo audio jack. Although an additional USB Type-A port would have been preferred, considering that some slim laptops have even fewer ports, the Yoga Slim 7i is forgiven for this.

I find the placement of the power button somewhat bothersome. It is located under the 3.5mm headphone jack, leading me to accidentally press it when handling the laptop. The webcam’s privacy shutter is situated lower on the right side of the laptop, with a tactile button for easy identification.

When it comes to the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i, its webcam performance is underwhelming. Despite being able to record Full HD videos with its 2MP sensor, the video quality falls short compared to the Envy 14 x360’s 5MP camera. Furthermore, the laptop includes an IR sensor for Windows Hello authentication but does not offer Windows Studio functionalities like Background Blur and Eye Contact, which are commonly found in laptops within this category. This absence is disheartening given the standard availability in similar laptops.

Keyboard And Trackpad

The keyboard on the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i is excellent, featuring concave keycaps with a 1.5-mm travel distance. It is equipped with a backlit LED that offers three brightness settings (Auto, Low, High) and can be disabled to save battery. The keyboard deck is sturdy, with well-spaced keys, providing a delightful typing experience.

The trackpad provides a smooth surface and accurately registers all my inputs. I was able to easily perform multi-finger gestures on it. Although it seems slightly smaller in comparison to the trackpads on the Inspiron 14 Plus and the Envy 14 x360, it functions perfectly without any issues.

Performance And Battery Life

Having tested multiple laptops featuring Intel’s Core Ultra processors, I had a good understanding of the Yoga Slim 7i’s performance before writing this review. After using the device extensively, I can confirm that its performance met my expectations. The laptop is equipped with Intel’s Core Ultra 7 155H processor. Which includes a 16-core CPU with six performance, eight efficiency, and two LPE cores. My review unit came with 32GB of LPDDR5X RAM running at 7,467MHz and a 1TB PCIe Gen4 M.2 SSD. In benchmark tests like Cinebench R24. Where both multi-core and single-core CPU workloads are assessed, the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i scored 618 and 97 points respectively. Comparatively, the Dell Inspiron 14 Plus, which also features a Core Ultra 7 155H processor, achieved scores of 624 and 91 points in the same tests.

GPU-focused tests from 3DMark’s collection demonstrate comparable results. The Yoga Slim 7i scored 2,237 points in Fire Strike Ultra, while the Inspiron 14 Plus achieved 1,920 points. Moreover, the Yoga Slim 7i performed well in the Time Spy Extreme and Night Raid benchmarks. Obtaining 1,858 and 26,942 points respectively. In comparison, the Inspiron 14 Plus garnered 1,817 and 26,959 points in the same tests.

The benchmark outcomes suggest that the Yoga Slim 7i is a very efficient device able to manage various office tasks such as word processing, web browsing, and running applications like Microsoft Teams, Excel, and Slack. Personally, I had more than 15 tabs active in Chrome and was utilizing apps like AirTable, Asana, and Basecamp alongside the browser. Nevertheless, I did not experience any delays or interruptions on the laptop.

The laptop is equipped with an efficient integrated Arc GPU capable of running certain casual games such as Valorant and Hades. It can also handle older open-world games like GTA V, Middle Earth: Shadow of War, and Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition, as long as you adjust some graphic settings. Our standardized testing process includes playing GTA V and Valorant at high settings and the display’s native resolution. The laptop achieved 55 FPS and over 150 FPS in these games respectively. That said, you can check out the gallery above to get a glimpse of its performance in other games. Note that the settings for each title will vary. As my goal was to hit at least 60FPS at 1080p resolution consistently.

Regrettably, the laptop tends to heat up significantly. So it’s not advisable to engage in gaming sessions for prolonged durations. Following a thirty-minute session of playing Middle Earth. Shadow of War, several of the laptop’s P-cores reach temperatures exceeding 90 degrees. Additionally, the laptop’s battery life is not particularly impressive. In the PCMark 10 Battery (Video) test. The laptop lasted eight hours and twenty minutes. Although it’s not the worst, I had higher expectations for its performance in this aspect. During regular usage, I was able to accomplish approximately six hours of work on the laptop, which should meet the needs of most users.
