POCO F6 Review: Design, Display, Cameras, Performance, Software, Battery And Charging

POCO F6 Review: The POCO F6, as the successor to the highly acclaimed F5, faces the challenge of exceeding its predecessor’s success. The POCO F5 established a remarkable standard, and the F6 is set to raise the bar even higher with its latest Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 SoC, constructed on the same platform as Qualcomm’s flagship chipset. In addition to this powerful upgrade, the POCO F6 debuts with an industry-leading charging solution and boasts the highest display peak brightness ever seen in an F-series smartphone.

Moreover, the POCO F6 is equipped with advanced camera features that promise stunning photography and videography capabilities. With a focus on innovation and user experience, POCO has integrated cutting-edge technology into the F6 to deliver exceptional performance and functionality. The device’s sleek design and premium build quality further underscore its position as a top contender in the competitive smartphone market.

As consumers anticipate the official release of the POCO F6, it is evident that this device is poised to make a significant impact in the realm of smartphones, offering a perfect blend of performance, style, and cutting-edge technology.

The POCO F6 appears to be a sensible advancement from the F5, staying in line with the latest trends. Nonetheless, the cameras perform well for a gaming-oriented gadget, and the battery life and charging speeds are commendable.

Design And Display

The design of the POCO F6 has not undergone significant changes compared to last year’s F-series model. It still showcases a plastic unibody design with flat edges and separate camera rings. The camera rings now have a slightly larger size and protrude more from the frame. Moreover, the glossy back has been substituted with a shimmery textured panel to prevent fingerprints and smudges. Despite the improvements, I believe it lacks the stylish flair that some similarly-priced phones offer.

Despite its 179-gram weight, the handset is remarkably lightweight and easy to use for long periods. The phone’s IP rating has been upgraded from 53 to 64, enhancing its resistance to water and dust. The F6 features a dual speaker system tuned by Dolby Atmos for high-quality audio. This year, the 3.5mm headphone jack present in last year’s model has been removed. Security is ensured through the in-display fingerprint scanner for quick device unlocking. In terms of connectivity, the handset includes a USB Type-C port and an IR blaster.

Despite having a slightly smaller display size of 6.67 inches compared to its predecessor’s 6.7 inches, the POCO F6 features increased brightness levels and screen resolution. It comes with the CrystalRes Flow AMOLED panel, offering 1.5K resolution and a peak brightness of 2,400 nits, resulting in enhanced picture quality and better visibility of content even in direct sunlight.

The screen is equipped with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus for protection, Dolby Vision, and HDR10+ for an enhanced viewing experience. It boasts a 94% screen-to-body ratio with minimal bezels, wet touch technology to prevent accidental touches, an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz, 68 billion colors, and a pixel density of 446 ppi. This display represents an incremental improvement over the previous version.

Cameras

The camera configuration of the POCO F6 comprises a 50MP OIS Sony IMX882 main sensor and an 8MP ultrawide lens with a 119-degree field of view. While the image quality of the ultrawide lens doesn’t quite measure up to the main sensor, there are issues such as distortion around the edges and lackluster detail. Nonetheless, the color accuracy aligns well with the primary camera, with the handset favoring cooler tones for a contrasting image effect.

In comparison to the Realme GT 6T, the POCO F6 delivers superior overall performance, boasting better dynamic range, satisfactory detailing, and color accuracy. Nevertheless, if these factors are not your top priority, you may prefer the Realme smartphone for its brighter image quality.

The POCO F6 features a 20MP selfie camera suitable for selfies and video calls, producing images with accurate skin tones in daylight. However, facial details may appear lacking with noticeable smoothing. The portrait mode provides good edge detection, but the bokeh effect may seem somewhat unnatural. In indoor or low-light conditions, image quality diminishes like many other smartphones, resulting in decreased sharpness and increased noise. While night mode reduces noise, it may impact image detail.

Performance And Software

Performance has consistently been the primary focus of the F-series smartphones, and the POCO F6 upholds this tradition. It is the first smartphone in India to incorporate Qualcomm’s newest Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset, designed to enhance user access to on-device AI. The chipset promises to provide key features from the flagship Snapdragon 8 series, such as on-device generative AI, an always-sensing ISP, highly realistic mobile gaming, enhanced connectivity, and high-definition sound without loss.

The POCO F6 lacks AI features but excels in performance, achieving a score of over 1,500,000 on AnTuTu. It may not surpass the iQOO Neo 9 Pro with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, but it leads its category. The F6 also delivers impressive results on Geekbench, with scores of 1,930 for single-core and 5,017 for multi-core tests. However, during the Burnout CPU throttle test, the handset shows significant throttling, operating at just 56% of its peak performance under heavy load.

Throttling was not noticeable in our usage. The phone handled various tasks well, including heavy multitasking and demanding games like BGMI, Call of Duty, and Real Racing 3. The POCO F6 is equipped with Iceloop cooling technology and LiquidCool Technology 4.0 to enhance thermal efficiency during gaming and other intensive activities. After playing games like BGMI, Call of Duty, and Real Racing 3 with moderate settings for 30 minutes each, the phone heated up by around 15 degrees. The gaming experience was smooth without any lag or dropped frames. Wild Boost Optimization 3.0 is included to ensure seamless gameplay.

The POCO F6 comes in two RAM and storage options: 8GB + 256GB and 12GB + 512GB. Though the storage cannot be expanded by users, it boasts fast transfer speeds thanks to the UFS 4.0 standard. The RAM is LPDDR5X. In terms of software, the POCO F6 runs HyperOS layered on top of Android 14 out of the box. It will receive major software updates for three years and security updates for four years. The current software experience is similar to that of the POCO X6 Pro.

At present, there are no exclusive features on the POCO F6, except for upcoming support for AI air gestures through a future OTA update. This feature will allow users to navigate compatible apps using hand gestures detected by the front camera, akin to certain Realme smartphones.

The software is user-friendly and easy to navigate, although it comes with numerous third-party applications already installed that you may need to review. There are a total of 16 preloaded apps, the highest number among smartphones in this category. On a positive note, these apps are widely used by millions of users, including Netflix, Spotify, Facebook, Amazon, Snapchat, and others.

Battery And Charging

Competitors are choosing larger battery cells. But the POCO F6 maintains its battery capacity from the previous year with a 5,000mAh battery. Testing at 80 percent screen brightness on the PCMark battery test resulted in 11 hours and 42 minutes of usage. Which is less than its competitors. During a 30-minute YouTube video playback test. The handset used up 4 percent of its battery. A higher consumption rate compare to the Realme GT 6T with a 5,500mAh battery.

During our gaming tests, the handset shows a significant drop of 24 percent in battery life after playing BGMI. Call of Duty, and Real Racing 3 for 30 minutes each. Despite this, the handset can last a full day on a single charge. It includes a 90W charger in the box that can recharge. The battery from 20 to 100 percent in approximately 30 minutes. There is also an option for faster charging using Boost charging in the settings menu. But it comes with a warning about potential device heating, especially in Delhi’s summer.

Conclusion

The POCO F6 faces competition from various smartphones, with the Realme GT 6T being its primary rival. Priced at a starting point of Rs 30,999 in India. The Realme device is distinguished by its LTPO panel that can reach a brightness of 6,000 nits. On the other hand, the F6 features a standard display with adaptive refresh rate and a peak brightness of 2,400 nits. Additionally, the F6 has a smaller battery capacity compare to the Realme GT 6T. Although the charging capacity is lower as well. Both smartphones take the same amount of time to fully charge from 20 percent due to the F6’s smaller battery size.

The POCO F6 stands out for its strong performance, quality cameras, and competitive pricing. It features the more powerful Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 SoC compared to the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 SoC. Allowing for superior image capturing in different lighting scenarios when compared to Realme’s offering. In India, the POCO F6 starts at Rs 29,999. Although it comes with pre-installed apps and a slightly shorter battery life. The POCO F6 offers a compelling option for users in search of a dependable and high-performing device.

Pros

  • The handset performs seamlessly to everything thrown at it.
  • The display offers excellent picture quality and smooth visuals.
  • The cameras are good compared to its closest arch-rivals.

Cons

  • Design lacks the panache that some of the other similarly priced phones bring to the table.
  • The app drawer feels bloated with several pre-installed apps.
