Durga Shakti Nagpal Illegal Sand Minning Case

Durga Shakti Nagpal gained significant media attention for her role in uncovering the extensive illegal sand mining operations in the National Capital Region (NCR), which encompasses areas like Faridabad, Delhi, and Noida. The scale of the illegal activity was staggering, with an estimated 250 to 350 trucks being illicitly loaded with sand from the region on a daily basis. This unregulated sand mining amounted to approximately Rs 5 billion in value annually. The detrimental effects of such activities included soil erosion and alterations in the natural course of rivers like Yamuna and Hindon. Moreover, these activities posed a considerable risk of flooding in the area. Responding to numerous complaints, a Special Mining Squad was established to address the issue.

As the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Nagpal orchestrated surprise operations that led to the arrest of illegal miners and the seizure of their equipment. This proactive approach resulted in the filing of 17 First Information Reports (FIRs), the arrest of illegal miners in 22 cases, and the collection of fines amounting to Rs 8,234,000. Due to her resolute actions against the sand mafia, she faced backlash and was targeted during a visit to the Kasna Police Station.

Durga Shakti Nagpal Suspension

Durga Shakti Nagpal faced suspension from the Uttar Pradesh government following her order to demolish a wall of an under-construction mosque in Kadalpur village, situated in the Rabupura area of Greater Noida. The circumstances surrounding her involvement in the demolition were somewhat ambiguous, with debates arising over whether her actions were justified. While her supporters maintained that she neither issued the order for destruction nor was present at the site during the event, some locals alleged that she personally supervised the demolition of the mosque wall. Her proponents argued that false allegations were being propagated by adversaries from the illegal sand mining case, seeking revenge.

The UP government filed a chargesheet against Nagpal, who steadfastly maintained her innocence and claimed that her actions were in accordance with the directives of the Supreme Court. However, in the face of strong public protests and widespread support, the Uttar Pradesh government was compelled to revoke her suspension. Various political parties and organizations representing Indian bureaucrats rallied in support of her cause. Consequently, on October 5, 2013, following the reinstatement of her position, she assumed the role of Joint Magistrate in Kanpur.

The conflicts that enveloped Durga Shakti Nagpal also extended to her family. On October 11, 2014, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav suspended her husband, Abhishek Singh, over allegations of mistreating a teacher in an inhumane manner. Abhishek refuted these allegations, and the government failed to provide concrete evidence substantiating the claims of inhuman action on his part.
