In this discussion, the focus will be on exploring the features of the newly launched Nothing Ear earbuds, while acknowledging the brand’s updated naming conventions. Following the introduction of Ear  and Ear, Nothing has opted for a streamlined approach with its nomenclature by labeling its latest premium earbuds as Nothing Ear.

Design And Controls

The Nothing Ear (a) has a striking yellow color, while maintaining the same design and transparent aesthetics as its predecessor. I have conflicting thoughts about this choice. Although I appreciate the Ear (a) in the new vibrant color and would have welcomed additional color choices, I also question the need to change something that is already successful.

Although the Ear and the Ear (2) have a similar design, the Ear is slightly bigger and heavier. However, the in-ear sensation of these wireless earphones is unchanged despite these minor variations. Thanks to their secure fit, I could wear these TWS earbuds for extended periods without any ear discomfort. Even when I intentionally shook my head vigorously to check their fit, the earbuds stayed in place without falling out.

The case is compact enough to fit in my pocket effortlessly. It features a pairing button and a Type-C charging port on the side. The brand has maintained the successful design elements from the previous generation TWS, and overall, there is no room for complaints if everything functions well.

The default controls on the left earbud stick include double-pinching to skip forward or decline a call, triple-pinching to skip back, and pinching and holding for noise control. A single pinch on the left ear stick handles play/pause and call functions. All controls, except for single-pinch commands, are customizable to assign different actions to gestures. This customization can also be done on the right earbud stick. Once I configured noise control and volume adjustment gestures, I quickly adapted to the controls which I found intuitive.

Sound Quality And Audio Features

The Nothing Ear stands out in the realm of earbuds not just for its design but also for its exceptional sound quality and features. Equipped with a ceramic diaphragm and an 11mm dynamic driver, these True Wireless Stereo (TWS) earbuds deliver a rich and authentic sound that stays true to the original source. Supporting AAC, SBC, LHDC 5.0, and LDAC codecs, the Nothing Ear ensures a high-quality audio experience.

One of the standout features of these earbuds is their impressive sound signature, characterized by a well-balanced frequency spectrum. The bass is deep and punchy, yet it harmoniously blends with the mids and highs without overshadowing them. The tight and controlled bass adds a satisfying thump to the music while preserving details and clarity. Beyond sound quality, the Nothing Ear also excels in providing various codec options to cater to different preferences and devices. Whether you’re an audiophile seeking high-resolution audio or someone looking for reliable wireless connectivity, these earbuds offer versatility in delivering an immersive listening experience.

Transitioning to the midrange, you will experience precise and clear vocals that capture the subtle intricacies of a singer’s voice. Enjoying acoustic tracks with these earphones provides a satisfying experience due to the excellent reproduction of notes. Moreover, the earbuds effectively handle high frequencies, delivering crystal-clear sound. Similar to the previous Truly Wireless Stereo (TWS) in the lineup, you have the option to personalize your sound settings and controls for the Nothing Earbuds using the Nothing X application. The app’s main screen is divided into four categories – Equalizer, Controls, Noise Control, and Bass Enhance.

In the ‘Equalizer’ segment, you can craft a customized sound profile that is shareable. The ‘Controls’ section enables you to tailor controls for gestures on each earbud. With ‘Noise Control,’ you can select from Transparency, Noise Cancellation, or the default (off) modes. Introducing a new feature, Bass Enhance allows you to boost the bass output of the TWS. I noticed a distinct improvement in bass quality and typically kept it at the maximum level (level 5). You have the ability to customize your sound profile, perform an ear tip fit test, enable or disable dual connection and in-ear detection, and activate or deactivate Low Lag mode for reduced latency during gaming.

Additionally, there is a feature called ‘Find My Earbuds’ which allows you to locate your earbuds by triggering a buzzing sound. Furthermore, you can switch between LHDC, LDAC, and AAC codecs within the application. The inclusion of LHDC 5.0 and LDAC codecs supports high-resolution Bluetooth streaming. If you value top-notch audio quality as an audiophile, this feature would be greatly appreciated. Having Bluetooth 5.3 support made my pairing process smooth most of the time. Nonetheless, I encountered occasional audio syncing problems while conducting the review. Since these issues were infrequent, I believe the brand can resolve them in upcoming updates.

ANC And Call Quality

While I had reservations about the ANC on TWS in the past, I was pleasantly surprised by the Nothing Ear. These wireless earphones provide noise cancellation of up to 45dB, slightly lower than some lower-priced earphones offering 49dB. Nevertheless, thanks to the innovative Smart ANC algorithm, the Nothing Ear delivers remarkable noise cancellation. The brand explains that the Ear automatically monitors the earbuds’ seal in your ear canal for any noise leakage and compensates by enhancing noise cancellation.

This calibration occurs each time you wear your earbuds in ANC Mode, without the need for a hearing test or manual adjustment. The new earbuds have an enhanced version of Adaptive ANC. The company has optimized the noise reduction for different situations, providing refined real-time elimination. The 3 noise cancellation modes now align with actual real-life scenarios.

– High: Subway/Airplane
– Medium: Street/Cafe
 Low: Office/Indoor

Alternatively, you also get the option to manually select High, Medium or Low in the Nothing X app for a fixed level of noise cancellation. In effect, these earphones do a really good job of eliminating noise.

Coming to the call quality, the new version of Clear Voice Technology (v3.0) offers an AI-noise reduction algorithm that detects a voice, enhances it, and filters out unwanted background noises in real-time. As a result, the call quality is pretty decent too.

Battery life

The Nothing Ear claims to provide 8.5 hours of battery life on a single charge (40.5 hours with the case) without ANC. When ANC is activated, these earbuds can deliver 5.2 hours (24 hours with case).

These wireless earphones feature significant enhancements compared to the Ear (2), providing a battery life of 6.3 hours on a single charge (36 hours with the case) when ANC is off. They are designed for easy charging with support for up to 2.5W wireless charging and a Type-C charging port, making them highly convenient for daily use.

Verdict

The price increase from Rs 9,999 for the Ear (2) to the initial price of Rs 11,999 for the Nothing Ear may raise concerns for some consumers initially. However, the enhancements in sound quality, active noise cancellation (ANC), and battery life undoubtedly justify this price adjustment. Nothing’s strategic pricing for the Ear is intriguing as it positions the product in a segment with limited direct competition offering similar features.

For a slightly higher budget, options like the Marshall Motif are available, while those looking to spend under Rs 10,000 can consider the JBL Live Pro+. The Nothing Ear presents an attractive choice for individuals seeking earphones priced below Rs 15,000 that deliver impressive sound quality, ANC capabilities, and extended battery performance. Furthermore, its distinctive design ensures that these earphones continue to stand out in a market saturated with options.

Conclusion

If you’re looking for earbuds that offer a unique blend of style and performance, the Nothing Earbuds are a fantastic choice. With their sleek design and upgraded features, these earbuds provide a high-quality audio experience that is sure to impress. Whether you’re a music enthusiast or simply someone who appreciates great sound, the Nothing Earbuds deliver on both fronts. Treat yourself to a pair of these exceptional earbuds and elevate your listening experience to new heights.
