Within the Final Fantasy community, discussions abound regarding the alterations in the storyline compared to the original game.
With many noting that FF7 Remake only scratches the surface of the full gaming experience. The remake’s stunning graphics and revamped combat system have received widespread acclaim, breathing new life into a beloved classic for both long-time fans and newcomers to the series. Despite any deviations from the original plotline, FF7 Remake has managed to strike a chord with players by blending nostalgia with modern gaming elements seamlessly.

The good thing is that this iconic game introduce a whole new set of audience (like me) to it and I enjoy it. Just like Peter Jackson revived Lord of the Rings to a whole new audience with his films, FF7 Remake is aimed at telling a beloved classic tale to a fresh audience taking creative liberty to alter the story. Considering the grand scale of the remake, developer Square Enix has broken it up into a trilogy. I enjoy FF7 Remake enough to dive into part 2 of this epic saga – Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
The Final Fantasy series has always been known for its intricate storytelling, immersive gameplay, and stunning visuals. The FF7 Remake stays true to these elements while also introducing modern gaming mechanics and enhanced graphics that appeal to both long-time fans and newcomers alike.

Although there is a story recap at the beginning of the game, players would benefit more if they have prior experience with the game, particularly understanding the subtle details not included in the recap. Playing FF7 Rebirth without playing Remake is akin to playing God of War Ragnarok without experiencing God of War 2018. It may be understandable, but much is lost in the process.
The story is rich in content, with you returning as Cloud Strife leading the eco-terrorist group Avalanche against the malevolent Shinra corporation. Shinra aims to deplete the planet’s life force, while you strive to thwart Sephiroth, the villain pulling the strings. Along the way, you will be joined by new characters to bolster your party, which includes familiar faces like Barret, Tifa, Aerith, and Red XIII from the previous game.
In the realm of spoilers, the narrative of Final Fantasy 7 can be described as a Multiverse. Although not explicitly stated in the game, one can discern being in an alternate universe upon encountering ‘Stamp,’ the mascot dog portrayed differently in each universe. The game frequently hints at the concept of a multiverse, yet it only becomes somewhat evident towards the conclusion. Perhaps the third installment will connect all the dots? An intriguing instance is Cloud recounting his encounter with Tifa in her village during his early days as a soldier, a memory that Tifa herself does not recollect.
Aerith’s death raises questions, suggesting a possibility of her survival in a parallel universe. Similar to middle chapters in trilogies, the game’s ending is not entirely conclusive. Despite this, the game offers a captivating story with intriguing plot twists, sparking ongoing debates among gamers until the release of the third game.
Gameplay
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth retains the core gameplay of its predecessor while introducing some favorable adjustments. The primary difference lies in the expansive world available for exploration. Unlike the linear path of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Rebirth offers a diverse open world with six distinct regions, each with its unique environment and style. While the open world includes familiar elements like climbing towers to reveal area activities, some players may find this repetitive. However, personally, I appreciate the freedom of exploring a map without markers, such as in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Given my busy schedule, I value the ability to engage with an open-world game, complete tasks indicated on the map, and then return to reality.
Shifting focus to the combat aspect, it presents a traditional third-person action-adventure format with a unique element. Players have the option to command their team members to utilize their distinct skills, enhancing the combat experience and introducing a considerable amount of variety depending on the controlled character. Moreover, the Synergy Abilities feature allows for the combination of two characters’ special skills to execute impressive maneuvers. These skills enable players to swiftly engage enemies, elevate a character for aerial combat, or unleash powerful attacks. This feature adds an entertaining layer of complexity, elevating the gameplay above mere button pressing.
In my time with the game, I didn’t delve into many of the side quests, but I plan to explore them in my next playthrough. The Witcher 3 features Gwent, a popular card game, while Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth introduces Queen’s Blood. Although some players enjoy the card game, it wasn’t to my liking. I avoided Gwent in The Witcher 3 and tried to skip Queen’s Blood as much as possible. However, if you like having a card game within an action game, this might be something you’d find enjoyable.
In general, the gameplay in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is very intricate. The combat offers sufficient complexity to maintain freshness, particularly with the synergy abilities, along with numerous optional side quests and diverse bosses for players aiming to enhance their combat abilities.

Graphics And Sound
Beginning with the visuals, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth offers two choices – 4K graphics at 30 FPS, or Performance mode at 60 FPS with reduced resolution. The game has undergone several updates during my time playing it, and I primarily used the Performance mode at 60FPS. Playing on my LG 55-inch B9 OLED TV from a distance of 6 feet, the graphics appeared impressive and the 60FPS provided a superior gaming experience, especially suited for a fast-paced action game such as this.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth truly excels in its sound design. The orchestral score enhances combat and cinematic sequences, keeping the player engaged. Similarly, the somber tunes during key moments and exploration evoke a sense of peace. The sword’s impact on enemies creates a satisfying sound. The voice performances are impressive as well. In my experience, many Japanese games feature exaggerated voice acting, and this game follows suit to some extent, albeit with a slightly more subdued approach, particularly in key story scenes.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a fantastic action-adventure game that will appeal to fans of Devil May Cry, Monster Hunter, and the recently released Final Fantasy XVI.
