Design And Display

The HP OMEN 16 departs from the typical look of a gaming laptop with its sleek all-black finish that lacks bold decals or logos. The elegant OMEN branding on the lid gives it a sophisticated appearance, without the cartoonish vibe. Unlike many gaming laptops, the OMEN 16 doesn’t feature RGB lighting or excessive bulk, making it suitable for more discreet settings like cafes or coworking spaces. While those seeking a bolder design may find the monolithic chassis unimpressive, fans of a stealthier gaming laptop will appreciate its aesthetic.

The laptop impressed me with its solid build quality, utilizing a combination of metal and plastic for durability. The keyboard deck remains sturdy without flexing under pressure, ensuring a comfortable typing experience. In the same vein, the laptop’s hinges provide strong resistance, preventing any wobbling of the display and keeping it securely positioned at the preferred angle. Notably, the HP OMEN 16 features a 16-inch Full HD screen that operates at 165Hz with a 7ms response time. While it doesn’t reach high levels of brightness, peaking at 300 nits, the screen does cover the entire sRGB color spectrum and is equipped with an anti-glare coating to minimize reflections.

The laptop’s powerful hardware allows many games to easily achieve 144FPS or higher. Popular titles such as Hades, Apex Legends, Valorant, and XDefiant perform well on the laptop’s HRR screen, giving gamers a competitive advantage. The high refresh rate also improves the experience of reading PDFs, articles, and documents. The display provides wide viewing angles, vibrant colors, and minimal color distortion when viewed from different angles. Overall, it is ideal for watching movies.

Ports and Webcam

The HP OMEN 16 features several ports, such as two USB Type-A 5Gbps ports, two Thunderbolt 4 connectors, and an HDMI 2.1 slot. It also includes an RJ45 port for networking and is compatible with Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. If only it had an extra Type-A port, I could effortlessly connect all my accessories without needing a dock due to having three devices that rely on USB Type-A. Keep in mind that individual experiences may differ.

I support the positioning of the ports, with some located at the back between the heat vents, facilitating HDMI routing. The webcam offers decent picture quality but lacks Windows Hello recognition and Windows Studio effects. The laptop also lacks a fingerprint sensor, necessitating the use of a password or PIN for unlocking.

Keyboard And Trackpad

The HP OMEN 16 features a full-size keyboard that includes a dedicated Numpad on the keyboard deck. Personally, I would have preferred larger, more widely spaced keys over the Numpad to avoid the cramped feeling on the laptop’s keyboard deck. During gameplay of XDefiant, I often mistakenly pressed ‘F’ instead of ‘G’ due to this layout, causing frustration when executing actions.

On a positive note, the keyboard boasts four-zone RGB backlighting and 26-Key Rollover, allowing simultaneous key presses without any input issues. Additionally, the trackpad provides a smooth surface and is sufficient for use when a mouse is not available.

Performance And Battery Life

I was pleased with the performance of the HP OMEN 16. The review unit is equipped with an Intel Core i7-14700HX processor with eight performance and twelve efficient cores, capable of up to 28 threads. The P-cores can reach up to 5.50GHz. The laptop features an RTX 4060 GPU with a TGP of 140W, the maximum wattage supported by Nvidia’s RTX 4060 mobile GPU. The unit also boasts 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM clocked at 5,600 MHz and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD. The powerful hardware of the OMEN 16 ensures excellent gaming performance, handling a variety of games smoothly at different resolutions.

Apex Legends runs smoothly at 2K resolution with a consistent 144FPS output, although some graphics presets needed adjustment. Despite this, the game performed flawlessly even during intense moments. Valorant also performs well, achieving over 200FPS at 2K resolution with high graphics presets. XDefiant, a high-paced PvP shooter, runs at approximately 90-100FPS at 2K resolution, but optimizing the screen’s 165Hz refresh rate by reducing the resolution to 1080p can yield around 140FPS in the game.

God of War and Deathloop performed well at 2K resolution, with God of War maintaining an average of 50FPS on the laptop. Hades, a less demanding game, achieved an impressive 600FPS at 2K resolution on the same laptop. Some AAA games may require running at 1080p resolution, such as Witcher 3, which runs at approximately 65FPS on Ultra graphics settings. Activating RT reduces the frame rate, but the game remains playable at 40FPS.

Similarly, Cyberpunk 2077 runs at around 30FPS with full HD resolution, high graphics settings, and Ray Tracing enabled. It’s worth noting that this performance is achieved without Nvidia’s DLSS technology, which could significantly increase the frame rate. Without Ray Tracing, Cyberpunk 2077 runs at about 60FPS.

Fans of racing games will be happy to hear that titles like NFS Unbound perform excellently on the laptop. In Unbound, I experienced smooth gameplay while driving through the city streets at a steady 65FPS. The game was running at 1080p resolution with the highest graphics settings (excluding DLSS). Hogwarts Legacy proved to be one of the more demanding games on the laptop, requiring adjustments to maintain high FPS consistently. Playing at the Medium preset resulted in an average of 100FPS, while at the High preset with Nvidia’s DLSS technology for optimized performance, the game ran at around 80FPS.
Throughout my gaming sessions, I observed that the laptop’s chassis heated up significantly, especially the area above the keyboard deck. It’s worth noting that many of the P-cores reached temperatures of 100 degrees. Despite this, the laptop did not experience any performance throttling issues. Additionally, the fan noise remained minimal and did not hinder my gameplay experience.

It goes without saying that the laptop excels in day-to-day tasks such as web browsing and regular office work. It is also suitable for creative tasks like video editing, thanks to its accurate display and fast performance. Notably, it outperforms devices with Intel’s U-series processors and Arc graphics when performing tasks like applying filters. You can rely on the OMEN 16 for strong performance. Like many gaming laptops, the OMEN 16 has below-average battery life. Therefore, it is advisable to save your work frequently when using the laptop unplugged. Predictably, it lasted just under three hours in PCMark 10’s Battery drain test. On a positive note, the laptop offers upgradeable RAM and storage for enhanced performance in the future.

Verdict

The HP OMEN 16 is priced at approximately Rs 1.5 lakh in India as per specifications. Despite some drawbacks such as limited battery life and a compact keyboard deck, this gaming laptop offers powerful performance suitable for running AAA games at high settings and 1080p resolution. Its impressive display enhances the gaming experience, particularly for eSports titles like Valorant and Apex Legends. The subtle design and sturdy build quality make it a top choice for aspiring gamers.
