BenQ GV31 Review: Design, Features, Viewing Experience And Sound

BenQ GV31 Review: The BenQ GV30, introduce in 2021, revolutionized the concept of portable projectors with its innovative circular design. The ability to rotate the projector on its axis using the magnetic stand allows for effortless adjustment of the projection angle according to individual needs. Additionally, the inclusion of a streaming device that fits seamlessly inside the projector like a battery adds to the convenience and functionality of the device.

One key aspect common to successful designs is their longevity, and BenQ has continue this trend with its GV series of portable projectors. Despite the release of the upgrade GV31 model, which retains the distinctive circular design while incorporating significant enhancements, BenQ has chosen to keep the GV30 in production due to its enduring popularity and unique features. This decision underscores the brand’s commitment to providing users with versatile and high-performing projector options that meet a variety of needs and preferences.

BenQ GV31 Review 2024

The GV30 projector remains priced at Rs 41,989 in India, while the GV31 is currently priced at Rs 59,990. These projectors target different audiences in distinct price segments; hence, it is advisable not to consider the GV31 as a direct replacement for the GV30 but rather as a unique product on its own. With that distinction made, I would like to delve into my personal experience with the GV31. The GV31 projector boasts several upgraded features compared to its predecessor, the GV30. One notable improvement is its enhanced brightness and clarity, providing a more immersive viewing experience. The GV31 also offers improved connectivity options, making it easier to stream content from various devices seamlessly.

Furthermore, the GV31 comes equipped with advance image processing technology that delivers sharper images and vibrant colors. Its sleek and modern design adds a touch of elegance to any setting, whether it be for home entertainment or professional presentations. In conclusion, while the GV31 may come at a higher price point than the GV30, its enhanced performance and features make it a worthwhile investment for those seeking superior visual quality and versatility in a projector.

Design

The GV31 LED projector has a compact design and a rotating angle projection, facilitated by a magnetic base. It is 131.3 x 203.2 x 191.4mm in size and weighs only 1.7kg, making it easy to transport in a bag for gatherings. Unlike other projectors that require stand adjustments for different angles, the GV31 can simply be rotated to project images on walls or ceilings without additional adjustments. Its rotating lens provides a wide range of projection angles, and the projector stand allows for easy adjustment.

The portable projector comes with the following ports:

\
  • HDMI port
  • USB Type-A port
  • USB Type-C port (supports data transmission, DisplayPort output (DP Alt Mode), and power delivery (PD inputs and outputs)
  • Audio jack
  • Charging port

The GV31, similar to the GV30, features a mesh design on both sides. Additionally, the right side cover is removable, providing access to a dedicated slot for either the brand’s streaming device (QS02) or an Amazon Fire TV stick. On top of the projector, there are four buttons for input selection, volume adjustment, and power control. The BenQ GV31 remote control is quite lengthy, yet it includes the majority of necessary buttons and boasts good construction quality. Its white color and substantial size also make it difficult to lose.

Features

Despite its compact size, the portable BenQ projector is equipped with numerous features. It runs on Android 11.0, providing access to popular streaming apps, and utilizes a DLP projection system. DLP technology involves a DMD chip with thousands of tiny mirrors to create images. The GV31 supports a native resolution of 1080p and employs an LED light source with a lifespan of up to 20,000 hours in Normal mode and 30,000 hours in Eco mode. Key features of the BenQ GV31 include:

  • Peak brightness of 300 ANSI lumens
  • Contrast ratio of 100,000:1
  • Native aspect ratio of 16:9
  • A throw ratio of 1.2

Although the peak brightness may not appear remarkable on paper, I did not encounter any issues while watching content in a sufficiently dark room. The contrast ratio is excellent for the price range, providing depth and detail in both bright and dark scenes. The intriguing part is that the projector includes a built-in battery, providing up to 300 minutes of music playback and 180 minutes of video playback without needing to be connected to a power supply. This feature makes it ideal for outdoor gatherings where power sources are scarce.

It’s important to note that the battery life may vary based on the type of content, media input, and projector settings. In my experience, I managed to enjoy approximately two hours and 15 minutes of video playback before the battery drained. This allows for watching a movie or a few episodes of a series effortlessly. If you have a power bank, you can conveniently use the projector throughout the night. The projector provides a 98% coverage of the Rec. 709 color gamut and includes Bright, Cinema, Daytime, Game, Living Room, and Sports picture modes. It has an input lag of 45ms at 1080p (60Hz). The GV31 is compatible with Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi Standard 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax (2.4GHz/5GHz), and wireless projection functionalities like AirPlay and Google Cast.

Viewing experience and sound

One of the primary advantages of owning the GV31 is the lack of limitations. It can be easily transported, moved around the house, and even used for ceiling projection. The projector can display an image of up to 80 inches from a distance of seven feet, and a massive 100 inches from 8.7 feet away. While the maximum image size is 120 inches, optimal picture quality is achieved at around 90 inches. Setting up is a breeze with the Smart Autofocus feature for automatic adjustments and the Auto vertical keystone for a square image.

Let’s now discuss the primary factor of any projector – the image quality. The GV31 delivers sharp and detailed visuals with remarkable color accuracy. Although limited to 1080p resolution, I enjoyed watching my favorite movies and TV shows on this projector. While I hope for a future model to support 4K resolution, the 1080p content quality is impressive. However, like other projectors in this price range, ambient light significantly affects legibility.

BenQ is promoting the GV31 as the ideal companion for on-the-go gatherings. A strategic decision given its features like a built-in battery, easy setup, small and light build, and adjustable projection angle. This projector is designed for portability, offering not only good picture quality but also a seamless way to enjoy movies, TV shows, or videos with friends. By focusing on 1080p resolution, which is commonly used for videos, rather than 4K. The projector strikes a balance between affordability, image quality, size, and ease of transport.

The BenQ GV31 is equipped with a built-in 2.1channel sound system featuring dual 4W midrange tweeters and an 8W woofer branded as Trevolo. Users have the convenience of playing music directly from the GV31 through integrated streaming apps and a dedicated wireless speaker mode. The projector’s audio performance impressed me, eliminating the necessity of connecting an external soundbar. Both volume output and sound quality from the internal speakers were deemed satisfactory.

Conclusion

Featuring a compact and lightweight structure, the BenQ GV31 is a portable projector suitable for indoor and outdoor gatherings. Prioritizing convenience in its design, this device excels in providing ease of use. During my experience with it, I relished the ability to power it on and adjust its angle to suit any room. Opt for improved image quality and a personalized home theater arrangement.

Opting for the more expensive X300G is an option. But if you’re looking for a projector for enjoyable gatherings with loved ones. The ideal choice would be the GV31. It provides excellent image quality and the built-in speakers deliver good sound. Looking ahead, it would be great if BenQ releases a successor with a native 4K display and improved battery life. Which could potentially lead to market dominance for the next device in the series.
