History Of The Greek Super League

Greece was rule by a military government from 1967 to 1974, when Cyprus won the championship and play in Greece’s top division the following season. In the middle of the 1970s, democracy was restore in the country, and the practice of “hosting” the best team from Cyprus, a brother state, was stop. In 1979, all Alpha Ethniki clubs in Greece became SAs (Greek for “anonymous companies,” Société Anonyme in French). This mark the beginning of professional football in Greece.

The Greek league’s first and only non-Athens/Piraeus or Thessaloniki club, AEL, Athlitiki Enosi Larissas (Athletic Union of Larissa, a city in central Greece), won the championship in 1987-88. This was a historic year for the league. Only six clubs have won the championship, including Aris, which did so three times before the Alpha Ethniki were forme in 1959. Olympiacos Piraeus is proud to have won more trophies than Panathinaikos, AEK, which is from Athens, and PAOK, which is from Thessaloniki. In the mid 90s, AEK figured out how to come out on top for three successive championships without precedent for their set of experiences, playing some truly noteworthy football. With the strongest team on the field, the wealthiest businessman/owner financing them (Sokratis Kokkalis), and an undeniable streak of key referee decisions going in their favor, Olympiacos began to build their empire shortly thereafter.

Greek Super League Players

Only three teams have manage not to miss a single season in the top category since 1959, which is regard as the birth year of the Super League and its direct predecessor, the Alpha Ethniki; Panathinaikos, Olympiacos, and PAOK

The legendary Greek midfielder Dimitris, also known as “Mimis,” has played in more than 530 games, mostly for Panathinaikos and AEK. He holds the record for most games played. The league’s all-time leading scorer is Thomas Mavros, an AEK icon who also played a significant role in Panionios’ history (a smaller club that produced several important players but never won the championship). He has scored a league record 260 times. Polish striker Krzysztof Warzycha is another legend from Panathinaikos. He has played more games (390) and scored more goals (245) than any other foreigner in the Greek league. On and off the field, he has made friends with his skill, professionalism, and overall attitude.

The biggest games of the season are Olympiacos vs. Panathinaikos because they feature the clubs with the most success and the most devoted followings. The biggest Athens derbies are between Panathinaikos and AEK. The rivalry between PAOK and Aris in Thessaloniki is also significant, but the latter’s absence from the top division for a number of seasons since the middle of the 1990s has somewhat diminished it. Last but not least, Olympiacos vs. PAOK are by far the biggest games between teams from Thessaloniki and Piraeus/Athens, Greece’s two largest metropolitan areas.
