Design And Display

The most recent version of the Zenbook S 13 OLED stays close to its predecessors while still managing to make a strong impression right from the start, regardless of whether you are familiar with it or not. Measuring just 1cm in thickness and weighing a mere 1kg, the Intel Evo-certified S 13 OLED showcases sleek geometric designs on the cover and is crafted from a material ASUS refers to as plasma ceramic aluminum. This material, purportedly 100 percent recyclable, exudes a premium look and feel, and offers some resistance to smudges and fingerprints. Additionally, the device meets MIL-STD-810H military-grade standards for durability, providing users with added reassurance.

The laptop features a full-sized HDMI port, two Thunderbolt 4-capable Type-C ports on the left, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port, and an audio combo jack on the right, offering decent connectivity options. Although the close proximity of the two Type-C ports may be a minor issue, overall, the connectivity department seems satisfactory. The speaker vents are positioned on the underside towards the side, preventing sound obstruction when the laptop is used on the lap. Cooling vents are situated at the bottom and towards the back of the laptop, becoming visible upon opening the lid.

Raising the lid also elevates the device’s base slightly, providing a more comfortable typing angle. With a 180-degree hinge, the display can be folded flat for easier screen sharing. While lacking touchscreen functionality and refreshing at 60Hz, the 13.3-inch 2.8K OLED display offers Dolby Vision, full DCI-P3 color gamut, TUV Rheinland eye care certification, and Pantone Validation. With 600 nits peak brightness, the display delivers vibrant colors and stunning visuals, suitable for various content types. To address OLED burn-in issues, the laptop includes the MyASUS software tool with a pixel refresh screensaver.

Keyboard And Trackpad

The keyboard on the ASUS Zenbook S 13 OLED is a standout feature, with ample spacing, easy typing, and no learning curve. The keys offer good travel, spacing, and a slight indentation for typing assistance. In addition to the dedicated Copilot key, there are useful hotkeys on the Fn buttons, and you can easily switch to regular Fn key functionality with a toggle lock. The arrow keys are slightly smaller, which is typical for this laptop category. The generously sized trackpad is responsive, has an anti-fingerprint coating, and supports multitouch gestures.

Software, Performance And Battery

The ASUS laptop comes equipped with Windows 11 Home and a licensed edition of MS Office Home and Student, providing essential software tools right out of the box. ASUS goes the extra mile by including useful utilities like the MyASUS software, which offers not only system diagnostic tools but also convenient access to settings such as battery care mode, fan profiles, noise-cancelling microphone settings, sound modes, and OLED care utilities. Moreover, the preloaded GlideX app enhances user experience by enabling seamless cross-device operation with your smartphone. This innovative feature allows for easy data transfer between devices, utilizing your phone as a webcam for the laptop, and providing additional functionalities to streamline your workflow. The thoughtful integration of these software elements showcases ASUS’s commitment to enhancing user convenience and productivity.

Handling performance is Intel’s Core Ultra 7 155U processor, mated to 16 gigs of LPDDR5X RAM, with a 1TB PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSD for storage. Two performance cores, eight efficiency cores and two Low Power-Efficient cores, with a Turbo clock speed of up to 4.8GHz (for the P cores) offer enough grunt for day-to-day work, and then some. It’s a work-oriented machine after all, and the hardware combo, with Intel Graphics included, isn’t meant to handle super-heavy workloads or intensive gaming. All said and done, the performance should suffice for most regular tasks that happen at locations which form this laptop’s natural habitat, i.e. boardrooms, airports, flights, cafes, client meetings, etc. A look at the benchmark numbers reflects the same, with the scores being higher than the similarly-configured HP Envy 14 x360.

It’s worth mentioning that when the laptop is stressed, the fan noise becomes quite audible. There’s a whisper mode available in MyASUS to address that. The ASUS machine logged respectable scores of 527 and 104 in Cinebench R24 multicore and single-core respectively, 6195 in PCMark 10, and 9883 and 2372 in Geekbench 6 multicore and single-core respectively. The PCMark 10 Battery test on video displayed a shade over 12 hours, showing how good the battery life is. The results are actually quite close to the 14-hour battery life promised by the brand. The 63Wh battery charges quickly too — touching 70 percent levels in around 50 minutes. Making things easier is the small and lightweight Type-C charger that comes with the machine.

The Dolby Atmos speakers, certified by Harman Kardon, are powerful and produce high-quality sound. While they may lack in bass, they are suitable for calls and watching movies in a quiet environment. The device lacks a fingerprint scanner but includes an effective FHD IR camera for security. Additionally, the webcam features various effects like lighting optimization and background blurring accessible through the MyASUS software.

Conclusion

The ASUS Zenbook S 13 OLED is priced at Rs 1,31,990, which I feel is a bit high for this lightweight device. While facing tough competition, its weight of 1kg sets a high standard. However, there are alternative devices available like the HP Envy 14 x360 that offer more versatility, with a 120Hz OLED display and a stylus, though it falls short on battery life compared to the Zenbook. On the other hand.

The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i 2024 provides better performance at the expense of battery life. Overall, the ASUS Zenbook S 13 OLED has many strong points, but a touchscreen would have been a valuable addition. With its smooth performance, stunning OLED display, long battery life, and solid yet lightweight build, this laptop is perfect for professionals on the go.

Pros:

  • Sleek and lightweight
  • Lovely OLED display
  • Smooth performance
  • Good battery life and fast charging

Cons:

  • Pricey
  • Can get noisy
  • No touchscreen
