Honda electric two-wheeler plans in India

After conducting in-depth research on the Indian market for more than two years, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India have developed a definitive strategy to enter the expanding electric two-wheeler market in India. As per Autocar India, Honda is intrigued to send off electric bikes in various body styles, execution levels and powertrain choices. Products with zero emissions will be based on swappable and fixed battery technologies.  Currently, Honda is working on two projects with the codenames GJNA and K4BA. These projects include a moped with a battery that can be swapped out and the upcoming Honda Activa Electric.

In just three years, the aforementioned models, which are expected to arrive on Indian roads in 2024, have the potential to sell 5 lakh units. With additional products on the way, the company anticipates that the number will reach 10 lakh units by 2026 and 2027. Honda is likewise anxious to lay out its swappable battery innovation and has proactively laid out a base in Bengaluru for Honda Power Pack Energy India Private Restricted (HEID). Since its launch in 2021, this front caters to the three-wheeler market. The Japanese automaker, on the other hand, intends to draw on its strengths when entering the Indian EV two-wheeler market. In Bengaluru, HEID operates 70 battery swapping stations and intends to expand to additional cities in the future.

Atsushi Ogata, president of Honda Motorcycle & Scooters India, is being credited as the mastermind strategist behind this action plan. He has spent approximately three years defining the company’s future course of action. By the end of the decade, according to Ogata, EV penetration will reach 15 to 20%. Additionally, the company intends to facilitate exports from India in order to meet its international demand.
