The Yamaha TW-ES5A’s design is unusual. The case is not very pocketable and looks like a small briefcase. Build quality & Design
We love introducing people to the Yamaha TW-ES5A and seeing how they react to its case. Everyone uttered the unambiguous question, “Hey, why are you giving me a bar of Cinthol in the name of TWS buds?” This is to be blamed on the extremely pale turquoise color of the case and the buds. The TW-ES5A’s case and buds are both big and chunky, which is the overall design theme. The case is made of dull, delicate touch plastic and isn’t precisely pocketable. The outer shell of the buds is made of shiny plastic, while the side that faces the ear tips is made of matte black plastic. This gives the buds a dual-tone look. We were reminded of the first truly wireless buds from 2015 and 2016 by the overall weight of the case and buds.
There are only three physical buttons on each of the buds, and there are no surfaces on the buds that are touch-sensitive. Despite our admiration for the buttons’ tactile quality, their mapping is a little off. Single pressing the left bud’s button pauses and plays a track, and double pressing it changes the ambient listening mode. The right bud has two buttons that allow you to interact with the voice assistant, skip a track, increase or decrease the volume, and skip forward one track. Because the left bud is the only one that can pause or play tracks, you can only use it to use a single bud, and you can’t skip songs. Also, the accompanying app doesn’t let you change the button mapping, which made us realize how we take touch controls on other TWSes for granted.

Advanced Listening Care, which ensures accurate frequency reproduction even at low volumes so you don’t have to listen to music at high volumes, is a feature that is heavily promoted here. This functions admirably, yet the buds don’t get all that uproarious. However, that is the cost of maintaining your hearing for a longer period of time, right?
On the buds, we listened to a wide range of content, including movies, podcasts, and music. The experience was just average for buds this price. Although the soundstage is surprising large, the bass, as we mentioned earlier, does not quite penetrate your soul. We used Apple Music to listen to music on a Google Pixel 7 Pro and Samsung Galaxy Flip 4 at the highest possible bitrate. During a noisy park walk, we listened to French Montana’s most recent hit, Unforgettable, to try something upbeat. Although the mids and highs were well-balanced, the song’s catchy beats’ vibrations were greatly missed. Increasing the equalizer’s lower frequencies somewhat restored some of the power.
