Swati worked with Professor Dave Miller at the Space Systems Laboratory (MIT) to investigate on-orbit operations. Mohan collaborated with the testbeds Synchronized Position Hold Engage and Reorient Experimental Satellite (SPHERES), SWARM, and ALMOST. She had multiple SPHERES tests performed on the International Space Station (ISS), some of which were performed by fellow MIT alumni astronauts Dan Tani and Greg Chamitoff. She also worked on the SPHERES Zero Robotics competition for students in middle and high school.

Swati studied orbit operation in the Space Systems Laboratory with Professor Dave Miller before pursuing her doctorate at MIT. She earned a Master of Science (MS) and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Swati began working at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, after receiving her doctorate. Throughout the mission’s development, she served as the lead system engineer. The Attitude Control System assists the vehicle in understanding what it must do. It also determines the spacecraft’s position in space.

The position of the spacecraft was fixed under their supervision during entry, distance, and landing on Mars, and commands were given for a safe landing. Swati stated that working at Jet Propulsion Laboratory is an honour after the successful landing of the perseverance rover on Mars in this mission. An attempt is made here to broaden one’s understanding of humanity and to always discover something new. She goes on to say that working in such an environment inspires her greatly. After finishing her Ph.D., she joined NASA in 2010, where she worked on the Cassini mission to Saturn and the Grail mission to the moon before the Mars mission 2020.

Swati Mohan was born in Bengaluru, Karnataka, but moved to the United States when she was a year old. He spent the majority of his childhood in Northern Virginia and Washington, DC. She had wanted to be a doctor for children since she was a child, but when she saw the telecasted American television series in 1966, her interest shifted to space. Swati was inspired by this American television series and pursued a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from 2000 to 2004 at Cornell University.
