Design

The POCO X6 Pro’s design retains the essence of the X4 Pro from a few years back. It boasts a large camera module that enhances its attractiveness and distinguishes it from other devices. With a black module present on all variants, the phone showcases a sleek dual-tone appearance. The protruding module ensures stability when the phone is laid flat. The curved sides of the module provide a comfortable grip without any uncomfortable edges.

The camera module contains four separate rings for cameras and an LED flash. It features etched ‘POCO’ and ’64MP OIS’ text. I received the ‘Racing Grey’ color option to review, which has a glastic black finish prone to fingerprints and smudges. Fortunately, POCO includes a high-quality TPU case with the device. This case not only helps prevent fingerprints but also improves the phone’s appearance and offers protection against minor accidents.

In addition, the POCO X6 Pro includes a USB Type-C port that serves for charging and transferring data. The device offers dual-speaker output with Dolby Atmos, providing clear and loud sound. Although lacking a 3.5mm headphone jack, it enables high-resolution audio for improved listening when using wireless earphones. To ensure security, the smartphone comes with an in-display fingerprint scanner for quick and safe unlocking.

Display

The display of the POCO X6 Pro is a minor improvement compared to the X5 Pro. It features a 6.67-inch AMOLED display with a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz, peak brightness of 1,800 nits, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and full 100% color gamut. Additionally, the screen includes ultra-thin bezels, Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for protection, and a small punch-hole design for the front camera.

The POCO X6 Pro offers a viewing experience that matches its impressive specifications. Its color reproduction competes with other smartphones in the same category, and it boasts excellent contrast ratio and viewing angles that rival pricier devices. The brightness is noteworthy for a mid-range phone, providing easy visibility outdoors, even in direct sunlight. With Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support available on platforms like Netflix, the device enhances the viewing experience when watching compatible TV shows and movies.

The business is referring to it as a ‘wet touch display’, which aims to avoid inaccurate touches from sweat or water exposure during gaming. During our experiments with small water droplets on the screen, it performed flawlessly. Nonetheless, we recommend avoiding heavy rain since the device is solely IP54 certified.

Camera

The POCO X6 Pro comes with a 64MP main camera instead of the previous 108MP sensor. Despite the decrease in resolution, it now offers improved stabilization thanks to OIS (Optical Image Stabilisation) and EIS (Electronic Image Stabilisation) support. The rear camera includes 8MP ultra-wide and 2MP macro lenses, which have stayed the same. For selfies and video calls, the phone features a 16MP front camera.
When it comes to image quality, there is room for improvement. While the camera delivers decent shots suitable for casual users, enthusiasts may find it lacking in detail and prone to noise. The stabilization ensures sharpness even in low light, although finer details may not be as pronounced. Color reproduction is generally good, slightly oversaturated but pleasing.
However, colors can appear less vibrant in low light conditions, a common trait among mid-range devices. Transitioning to the next point, macro shots are suitable for close-up shots in well-lit environments. The 16MP front camera captures attractive selfies, albeit it may blur facial features. The phone’s portrait mode requires enhancement in terms of edge detection.

Performance

When it comes to the performance of the POCO X6 Pro, it is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8300 Ultra SoC. This is a new mid-range chipset that includes four Arm Cortex-A715 performance cores and four Cortex-A510 efficiency cores. The performance cores are clocked at 3.35GHz, while the efficiency cores are clocked at 2.2GHz. POCO has introduced a large 5,000mm vapour chamber, previously only available in its F-series smartphone, along with WildBoost Optimisation 2.0 to ensure fast and smooth gameplay. Additionally, the chipset is compatible with fast LPDDR5X RAM (up to 12GB) and supports storage of up to 512GB UFS 4.0. Unlike many other mid-range phones, the POCO X6 Pro does not have a microSD card slot for storage expansion.

The POCO X6 Pro performs impressively well, with the chipset ensuring smooth operation for multitasking and efficient RAM management. It delivers benchmark scores close to those of the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, achieving a remarkable 13,31,887 on AnTuTu and 1,355 on Geekbench’s single-core test, and 4,315 on the multi-core test. The CPU throttle test shows the device operates at 81 percent of its peak output. The effective vapour chamber prevents overheating even under heavy loads, although the current cold weather in Delhi may be a contributing factor.

In the realm of gaming, the POCO X6 Pro excels at running BGMI smoothly on the highest graphics and frame rate configurations. I engaged in consecutive gaming sessions without experiencing any interruptions or drops in frame rates, even during intense gameplay. Although the phone does heat up slightly after prolonged use, it effectively manages its temperature. It’s worth noting that these observations were made in January in the capital city of India. Any alterations in thermal performance during the peak summer season will be documented in a future update to this post.

Software

The POCO X6 Pro is the first smartphone in India to come pre-installed with the new Xiaomi HyperOS. This operating system marks a shift from the familiar MIUI interface found on earlier POCO devices. Based on Android 14, the HyperOS bears a close resemblance to its predecessor, with minor enhancements such as lock screen customization that enables users to personalize their images with depth of field effects and styles reminiscent of iOS 17. In essence, the skin closely mirrors the global edition of MIUI 14 found on the recently released Redmi Note 13 Pro+.

Many of the modifications are behind the scenes, like AI functionalities enabling background changes in the gallery app and image copying to the clipboard. The control panel has a new design, but the ‘Settings’ icon has been moved along with the others, causing difficulty in locating it. The panel may need more polishing as it looks cluttered on the screen. The software comes with various third-party apps, adding to a slightly bloated user experience. Thankfully, HyperOS allows you to uninstall many of these apps, such as Xiaomi’s built-in calculator, scanner, and security apps.

Although the attempt to offer a seamless user experience is acknowledged, it would be preferable if there were no third-party applications initially. However, for those interested in customization, the efforts put into HyperOS by the company will be valued, especially considering its expected enhancements in upcoming updates. Additionally, POCO has committed to providing up to three years of significant software updates and four years of security updates for the X6 series.

Battery and charging speeds

The battery of the POCO X6 Pro, rated at 5,000mAh, matches that of its predecessor, the X5 Pro. The 67W Turbo Charging feature also remains consistent, requiring approximately 40-45 minutes for a full recharge from 0 to 100 percent. Subsequently, the phone can sustain a full day of activity, including gaming. In my usage, which involved 5-6 hours of screen-on-time, an hour of gaming daily, as well as navigation and streaming, the device performed well. In the PC Mark battery test, the POCO X6 Pro scored an impressive 12 hours and 25 minutes.

Final verdict

The POCO X6 Pro is a standout choice among gaming-oriented smartphones in the mid-range category. Although it’s early in the year, we anticipate the arrival of other impressive smartphones. The upcoming launch of the iQOO Neo 9 next month may pose a challenge to the X6 Pro. In the meantime, let’s compare this handset with last year’s performance-driven smartphones like the iQOO Neo 7 and OnePlus Nord 3. The POCO X6 Pro surpasses both in performance and offers a superior display compared to its competitors. However, it falls short in terms of software cleanliness when compared to the OnePlus Nord 3 5G and the fast charging capabilities of the iQOO Neo 7.

However, the smartphone’s minor drawbacks do not appear to be significant deal-breakers. The POCO X6 Pro boasts impressive 67W fast charging, though not the quickest, and its software is packed with features. The display and performance are excellent, and the battery life is notably impressive. Despite some minor worries about camera quality, the POCO X6 Pro proves to be a compelling option given its starting price of Rs 26,999.

Reasons to buy

  • The handset features a sizable camera module, which is quite eye-catching.
  • The phone offers an excellent AMOLED display, with impressive refresh rate, resolution, and more.
  • The performance is simply the best in the segment so far.
  • The handset can last at least a day between charges.

Reasons not to buy

  • UI looks a bit cluttered, with several pre-installed apps.
  • Cameras might leave the enthusiasts wanting for more.
