Design And Display

Upon first glance at the OnePlus Watch 2, one immediately notices its elegant and timeless appearance. Crafted with a polished stainless steel case and 2.5D sapphire crystal glass known for its exceptional scratch resistance, the watch radiates sophistication. Available in a singular 46mm case size, it boasts a substantial design. Choose between the Black Steel variant, featuring a sleek black case and Fluororubber straps, or the Radiant Steel option with a silver case and greenish straps. Both options come with classic stainless steel buckles and offer comfortable wear for extended periods. With standard 22mm quick release pins, swapping out straps of the same width is a quick and easy task.

The design features a part that extends towards the right side of the case, disrupting its circular symmetry. Positioned on top of this extension is a crown button, with an oval multifunctional key located below it that is primarily used for launching workouts. Both these physical buttons can be customized through settings. While the crown button is rotatable, turning it does not have any function. However, pressing the button will either take you to the watch face or open the app drawer.

Additionally, the Watch 2 is not just IP68 rated but also complies with military-grade MIL-STD-810H standards, ensuring its durability in challenging conditions and providing peace of mind to the user. At the forefront is a 1.43-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 466 x 466, reaching a maximum of 1000 nits in high brightness mode. Encased in 2.5D sapphire crystal, it offers responsiveness and displays vivid colors. Additionally, it supports Always-on Display (AoD), although the bezel surrounding the screen appears relatively broad.

Features

Prior to delving into the specifics of the functionalities provided by the OnePlus Watch 2, it is important to discuss its innovative technology designed to extend battery life. The smartwatch is unique in utilizing two distinct chipsets and operating systems — a 4nm Snapdragon W5 chip for Wear OS (referred to as Smart Mode) and a BES2700 chip optimized for efficiency for RTOS (known as Power Saver mode). The BES2700 chip remains active at all times, handling background tasks, while the Snapdragon chip is activated only when necessary to operate Wear OS applications. This dual-engine setup operates seamlessly with the goal of delivering prolonged battery life, a challenge that many Wear OS-enabled smartwatches commonly face.

The BES2700 chip with RTOS manages many health and fitness functions on the OnePlus Watch 2, enabling up to 12 days of usage on a single charge in Power Saver mode. Despite this, essential features such as notifications operate normally in this mode, excluding Wear OS apps. The usual smart features on the OnePlus Watch 2 include weather updates, alarms, timers, notifications, Bluetooth calling, among others.

It supports over 100 sports modes, tracks physical activity, steps, sleep, heart rate, stress, and SpO2 levels. Additionally, it offers respiratory rate tracking and the assessment of breathing issues. However, I wish it included features like ECG and BMI tracking. Advanced metrics for activities such as running, badminton, tennis, and skiing are available. Dual-frequency GPS ensures quicker and more precise tracking, along with auto workout detection and pause functionality.

Numerous watch faces can be downloaded and utilized on the watch, including analogue, digital, classic, and quirky options. The Play Store offers a wide variety of third-party watch faces for download, with both paid and free options. However, when you download and apply a new face, a notification appears on the watch screen indicating that the new face will only work in Smart mode, and the device’s battery life may decrease by one to two days.

With Wear OS, you have access to integrated apps such as Google Assistant and Calendar, which come preinstalled, and you can also add more from the Play Store. The seamless compatibility of Wear OS with your Google account ensures excellent integration with Google’s apps and services. The 32GB of internal storage will be beneficial, particularly if you plan to download numerous apps.

UI and app connectivity

The OnePlus Watch 2 utilizes a conventional swipe-drive interface provided by Wear OS. To access quick settings, swipe down; for notifications, swipe up; view tiles by swiping sideways, and press the home button to see installed apps. Once you familiarize yourself with it, the interface is quite user-friendly. To set up and sync data, the OHealth app is required. Unfortunately, this app is exclusive to Android, meaning iPhone users are unable to use the OnePlus Watch 2. It’s worth noting that OnePlus’ initial smartwatch was also limited to Android users.

I believe the OHealth app is quite basic, but it gets the job done and is user-friendly. It consists of three tabs: health snapshot, fitness, and device settings. In addition to customizing watch faces, you can personalize tiles for displaying information when swiping on the home screen. The app allows you to manage notifications, adjust various health and workout settings, and toggle functions like heart rate monitoring, SpO2, stress monitoring, and respiratory rate tracking.

Usage, Performance And Battery

The Snapdragon W5 chip, powering the OnePlus Watch 2, showcases impressive performance capabilities, ensuring a smooth user experience devoid of any lag. Even when operating in Power Saver mode, the watch maintains seamless functionality without any issues. In terms of monitoring activity and health data, the device proves to be reasonably accurate, falling within an acceptable margin of error. While the specific measurements displayed for individual metrics or days are noteworthy, it is advisable to focus on trends observed over an extended period for a more comprehensive understanding.

One standout feature of the OnePlus Watch 2 is its exceptional battery life. Equipped with a robust 500mAh battery, the smartwatch can last between 3 to 4 days in Smart mode on a single charge. Activating the Power Saver mode further extends the battery life significantly, providing users with prolonged usage durations. To facilitate charging, OnePlus supplies a compact charging base with a Type-C port in the packaging. Users can utilize either the Type-C to Type-A cable provided or their own Type-C cable for charging purposes. Additionally, the watch supports VOOC technology, ensuring rapid and efficient charging capabilities for enhanced user convenience and uninterrupted usage.

Conclusion

The OnePlus Watch 2 is priced at Rs 24,999 and offers several features at its price point. It would have been beneficial if OnePlus had released a version with a smaller case size to cater to individuals with slim wrists. Additionally, introducing an LTE model could have enhanced its appeal by allowing users to leave their phones at home while engaging in outdoor activities such as walking or running, enabling them to make calls and use apps like WhatsApp and music streaming without their phones. The absence of iOS support is disappointing.

The OnePlus Watch 2 provides multiple benefits, including efficient battery life due to its dual-chip, dual-OS design. It offers useful health and fitness features, supports Wear OS, seamlessly integrates with the Google ecosystem, and has a visually appealing design. Additionally, its solid construction quality is a noteworthy feature. Overall, the OnePlus Watch 2 is an attractive choice for Android users seeking a high-end smartwatch at an affordable price.
