About National AIDS Research Institute
In 1986, HIV infection was first discovered in India. Multidisciplinary research in virology, immunology, microbiology, clinical research, epidemiology, field-based trials, and socio-behavioral studies was necessary for national efforts to contain HIV at the beginning of the 1990s. Thus, in 1992, the National AIDS Research Institute (NARI) was established as an institute solely devoted to HIV/AIDS research.
On a seven-acre plot in Bhosari, Pune, is where ICMR-NARI is situated. The National AIDS Control Programme has been well supported by the Institute ever since its inception, particularly in the areas of surveillance, capacity building, laboratory services, and drug resistance studies. Wide-ranging national and international collaborations give ICMR-NARI strength. A distinguished group of scientists from a variety of fields serve as members of the Scientific Advisory Committee, which directs the Institute’s research activities. The Institutional Ethics Committee reviews and approves all research projects to ensure that they are carried out in accordance with the highest ethical standards. From the inception of new concepts to the implementation of those concepts and the final dissemination of results, community involvement and community participation in the studies have always been followed as a fundamental principle.
