Jennifer’s mother, Larry Jones, was a curler, and her father, Carol Jones, was also involved in the sport. At the age of 11, Larry began teaching Jennifer how to curl, but her interest in the sport had already begun when she spent time at the St. Vital Curling club. She went to Vanier School in south Winnipeg from kindergarten to grade 8 before moving on to Windsor Park Collegiate. During that time, Jones excelled in volleyball and curling.
She secured her first provincial junior title in 1991 as the third player for Jill Stasub.
