This horizontal folding smartphone, which will be manufactured entirely in India and dubbed the Phantom V Fold 5G, is a direct competitor to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series. This might be one of the reasons why its price of Rs. is so high. 88,888, approximately where smartphones that fold or flip vertically are typically found. The frame of the Tecno Phantom V Fold 5G is made of aluminum. The company has created a proprietary hinge that, according to the company, reduces the crease. If you run your finger across the center of the folding screen, you can still feel this, but you can only see it from extreme angles. Another interesting design decision is the gentle curve on one side of the outer display. The power button also houses the fingerprint sensor, and the ports and buttons are located where you would expect them to be. Although there was a little play in the hinge when the phone was folded, its build quality appeared to be acceptable during my brief time with it.

Design

In its first attempt, Tecno was successful in creating a foldable smartphone with an almost crease-free display, something Samsung has lacked. The Tecno Phantom V Fold is not at all a thin smartphone, but that’s the trade-off with nearly every foldable phone. The metal edges are slightly rounded, giving it a premium feel and a firm grip. The device also includes a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. It weighs almost 300 grams, making it one of the heaviest foldables available.

There are two versions of the Phantom V Fold, and we were given the Black model, which has a back texture made of plastic waste. It’s encouraging to see companies taking environmental responsibility into their smartphone designs as well as their packaging. The Phantom V Fold, in contrast to the Galaxy Z Fold 4, does not come with an official IP rating, which is a significant oversight.

The MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ processor from 2024 powers the Tecno Phantom V Fold. It is paired with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM, and MemFusion lets you add an additional 9GB of virtual RAM. The Tecno Phantom V Fold performs as a flagship smartphone should, despite having a processor from last year. During daily tasks, there are no lags, and games like Call of Duty Mobile and Asphalt 9 run smoothly.

Over a thousand apps, according to Tecno, have been optimize for the Phantom V Fold’s split-screen and multi-window modes. In stark contrast to stock Android, the phone uses HiOS 13 Fold, which is based on Android 13, and there is bloatware on the device that you really shouldn’t expect from a flagship phone. Multi-window and split-screen modes, as well as a compatibility mode that automatically adjusts the app’s display ratio to match the inner display, are useful features.

Camera

The Phantom V Fold surpassed my expectations in this area. At the back, it has a triple camera setup, but the 50MP primary sensor is the star of the show. The low-light photography stands out, but the daylight shots are crisp and have good color reproduction. The ultra-wide and telephoto lenses, on the other hand, are unable to produce the same quality of low-light images as the Phantom V Fold does.

Super Night, Pro Mode, Film Mode, AI CAM, augment reality shot, and a host of other options are include in the camera app’s features. The Sky Shop feature, which lets you change the sky to a variety of preset conditions like sunny, rainbow, starry, twilight, and more, was the most fun for me. Despite having support for up to 4K 60 on all but the primary sensor, the Phantom V Fold produces excellent videos.

Battery life

Although this isn’t always the case with the Tecno Phantom V Fold, it does struggle with heavy use. Foldable smartphones typically struggle with battery life. With light to moderate use, the phone will last all day and possibly longer; however, playing Call of Duty Mobile for extended periods of time will quickly drain it, and it may run out of battery before the day is over. Having said that, the 45W power brick on the Tecno Phantom V Fold quickly charges the 5000mAh battery, allowing you to charge it from 0% to 100% in under an hour.

The Tecno Phantom V Fold is evidence that cheaper smartphones with foldable screens are becoming a reality. The hinge does not maintain itself at any angle other than 90 and 180 degrees, despite the high-end design and care taken to reduce carbon emissions. VRR is available on both LTPO AMOLED displays, and the inner display’s 2K resolution produces content that is sharp and vivid.
