Engine

At the core of these two new machines is an all-new single-chamber engine that Win is calling the TR-series motor. With a displacement of 398cc and DOHC architecture, this unit is liquid-cooled. The Triumphs‘ output, which is 40 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 37.5 nm of torque at 6,500 rpm, is comparable to that of the KTM 390 line. However, the British bikes reach their peak power earlier in the rev range. The Triumphs, like the KTMs, have a six-speed transmission. It’s interesting to note that Triumph’s larger 900cc twin-cylinder models still have a 5-speed transmission.

In spite of the presence of fluid cooling, the motor elements a couple of cooling blades that sport a slick machined finish and are for the most part there for tasteful purposes. The triangular engine cover on the right side makes the engine’s overall appearance somewhat reminiscent of Triumph’s larger modern classic models.

Chassis

These new bikes have what Triumph refers to as a hybrid spine/perimeter frame made of tubular steel. While the two bikes share the same engine, the chassis of the two bikes differs significantly. According to Triumph, each bike has a unique chassis and suspension system. To begin with, the Speed 400 rides on 17-inch wheels at both ends that are covered in Metzeler Sportec M9RR rubber that is both upscale and athletic. The Scrambler, on the other hand, has a 19-inch/17-inch alloy wheel combination and Metzeler Karoo Street tyres as standard equipment.

Despite the fact that both motorcycles have the same basic suspension system—a 43mm big-piston fork and a monoshock—the Scrambler has a tiny bit greater suspension travel than the Speed. The Scrambler features 150mm of travel at each end, compared to 140mm and 130mm for the Speed. The front disc on the Scrambler is 320mm larger than the disc on the Speed, which measures 300mm. This is just another little variation in the brakes between the two cars. This could be because it has a little higher kerb weight than the Speed—179 kg as compared to 170 kg. The Scrambler will seat you higher off the ground than the Speed, at 835mm, thanks to its taller stance and more extensive suspension travel, as opposed to the Speed’s more approachable 790mm seat height.
