About PDC Cazoo World Darts Championship

The World Darts Championship will join the UK Open, Players Championship Finals, and Masters as part of Cazoo, Europe’s top online vehicle store, which makes purchasing and selling a car as easy and smooth as ordering any other goods online. The new multi-year agreement builds on Cazoo’s successful prior engagement with the PDC in 2021 as the title sponsors for the World Cup of Darts, European Championship, and Grand Slam of Darts by expanding it to eight important PDC tournaments.

The next Premier League, which runs from February through May and features athletes including World Champion Peter Wright, reigning champion Jonny Clayton, and No. 1 in the world Gerwyn Price competing in arenas throughout the UK, Ireland, Netherlands, and Germany, is also sponsored by Cazoo. The Cazoo UK Open, which will be held at the Butlin’s Minehead Resort and broadcast live on ITV4, will kick off the new deal in March. James Wade will be defending the title he won in the multi-board competition in 2021. The deal also includes the World Darts Championship, UK Open, Players Championship Finals, and Masters. The top 64 players from the 2024 Players Championship Order of Merit will compete in the Cazoo Players Championship Finals in Minehead in November before the focus shifts to the 2024 Players Championship.

PDC World Darts Championship History

The Premier League, a beloved competition for all darts lovers and bettors, was introduced by Sky Sports in 2005. It features the top players from the UK and Ireland competing against one another in a round-robin style to advance to the play-offs, where the winner is ultimately selected. Six wildcard picks decided by the PDC and Sky Sports round out the final lineup, which includes the top four players in the world who automatically qualify for the competition. It should come as no surprise that Phil Taylor is the most successful Premier League player of all time after finishing first in the standings eight times, winning the championship six times, and lasting an unprecedented 44 games without losing from 2005 to 2008.

While Glen Durrant and Jonny Clayton won the championship in their first seasons, Michael van Gerwen missed the last two finals and is one victory short of matching Taylor’s record. The other champions are Gary Anderson and Raymond van Barneveld. James Wade was the first to end Taylor’s reign in 2009 when he defeated the Power’s victor Mervyn King 13-8 in the final. Details on prior championships, a sampling of records, the season-ending standings for each previous year, and a list of participants are provided below.

PDC World Championship Overviews

One of the highlights of the darts calendar is the Cazoo World Darts Championship, which concludes the year with a festive extravaganza. This enormous knockout competition is the final PDC “Triple Crown” event of the year, and as such, it is one that both competitors and spectators eagerly anticipate. A small group of players who left the then-dominant British Darts Organization established the event for the first time in 1994. The competition quickly eclipsed the BDO’s equivalent World Championship, and it is now the de facto World Championship in the sport.

The World Darts Championship offers a fortnight of competitive action that features a mixture of seeded elites and rank outsiders. It begins in mid-December and concludes in the new year. Peter “Snakebite” Wright is the current World Darts Championship champion and owner of the Sid Waddell trophy. Thousands of lucky fans attend the event, which is now seen by millions of people on TVs around the globe and brings a joyous atmosphere to Alexandra Palace, the Championship’s longtime host venue.

Over the course of the season, each player played against the other seven players twice in a quarterfinal game. Two more nights also included additional matches with the same format. Based on how the league table appeared at the time, a draw bracket was created for those matches. Therefore, in the first round, the winner faced the player who finished eighth.
