In my previous review of the OnePlus Pad, I described it as a device primarily meant for media consumption. However, its potential to be more was hindered by Google’s integration of touch and trackpad in Android apps, leading to confusion. Priced at 45,000 Indian Rupees (INR), the tablet and keyboard case combination were expected to handle basic productivity tasks smoothly. Unfortunately, the OnePlus Pad fell short in this aspect.

On the other hand, the OnePlus Pad Go comes with a price tag of 20,000 INR and doesn’t carry the same burden of productivity expectations. With no support for a dedicated keyboard case or OnePlus Stylo, the company positions it more as a big screen with excellent speakers rather than a productivity machine. At this price point, its main goal is to provide an enjoyable viewing experience, and it largely succeeds in doing so.

About OnePlus Pad Go Review

The design of the OnePlus Pad Go is reminiscent of the OnePlus Pad, with the camera module positioned on the right side when holding the tablet vertically. This unique placement adds character to the device and distinguishes it from its competitors. However, I often had to readjust my grip to prevent smudges on the cameras. While this is a minor annoyance, it is worth noting that getting the tablet’s camera module dirty has little impact since it is not frequently used. Nevertheless, my instinctive response is to move my finger and readjust my grip whenever I use the Pad Go for reading purposes.

Weighing at 532 grams, it doesn’t give a heavy sensation when held with both hands. The polycarbonate back has a smooth and solid feel due to its dual-tone finish. If you plan on streaming your favorite shows for extended periods of time, I suggest purchasing the OnePlus Pad Go Folio case, which is priced at 1,399 INR. This case will enable you to place the tablet on a flat surface, eliminating the need to hold it while watching videos. The volume buttons are located on the right edge, while the power button can be found in the top-right corner and the USB-C port at the bottom. If you choose the LTE variant, there is a SIM card slot located at the top. These buttons provide satisfying tactile feedback.

Design and display

The OnePlus Pad Go draws inspiration directly from its older sibling. It retains a distinctive centrally-aligned round cutout on the rear panel for the single 8MP camera. Similarly, the front of the device also houses an 8MP selfie camera in landscape orientation, which I personally find more convenient than the portrait-oriented selfie camera on the iPad. The back of the device features a dual-tone finish, combining mint green and silver green shades in what OnePlus refers to as Twin Mint. Although the material used is polycarbonate, the smooth finish gives it a glass and metal-like appearance, which I find quite appealing. It’s commendable that OnePlus has managed to keep the pricing competitive without compromising on aesthetic value.

However, it’s worth noting that the glossy area around the camera on the back of the device is prone to collecting fingerprint smudges. To address this issue and provide additional protection against scratches and damage, I would recommend considering the separately sold OnePlus Go Folio case, priced at Rs 1,399. The resemblance in design between the original OnePlus Pad and the OnePlus Pad Go doesn’t bother me because it can still provide users with the same level of satisfaction, even if they choose not to go for the more expensive tablet. OnePlus follows a similar approach with its flagship and R-series phones, such as the OnePlus 11 and OnePlus 11R. Samsung also employs a comparable strategy by maintaining a consistent design for its Galaxy smartphones.
All the standard ports, including the power button, volume rockers, USB-C port for charging, and a SIM card slot (for the LTE variant), are located on the sides. However, it’s worth noting that there is no headphone jack – an unusual decision considering the price point.

When it comes to the display, I find the size satisfactory, although there are some features that could have been improved. The 11.3-inch IPS display provides a 2.5K resolution (2,408 x 1,720) and a refresh rate of 90Hz. Personally, I would have preferred a higher refresh rate of 120Hz, which is commonly offered by other competing devices. The brightness in controlled indoor environments is sufficient, but using the tablet outside in bright sunlight can be hit-or-miss. While reading on the Pad Go was enjoyable, I believe it is about time for OnePlus to consider adding a Reading Mode like Xiaomi and Realme devices have, in order to enhance the reading experience.

I conducted a test on the display by viewing both Guns and Gulaabs and Chris Nolan’s Interstellar. These movies contain numerous scenes with low lighting, and the OnePlus Pad Go effectively adjusted its colors. However, the IPS display could have had deeper black spots as a limitation. Nevertheless, this flaw is over shadow by the remarkable Dolby Atmos quad speakers.

Performance and software

The OnePlus Pad Go is powered by the MediaTek Helio G99, which is also utilized by the Realme Pad 2 (review). Besides the 128GB Wi-Fi-only model, there is an LTE version with the same storage capacity price at Rs 21,999. I opted for the high-end LTE variant with 256GB UFS 2.2 storage, which had a price tag of Rs 23,999. All storage options come with 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM.

When it comes to performance evaluations, the MediaTek Helio G99 achieved average results in Antutu, Geekbench 6, and PC Mark assessments. It is worth noting that the Realme Pad 2, which also utilizes the same chipset, outperformed the Helio G99 in these tests. On a positive note, the Helio G99 is known for its stability as it rarely encounters heating problems. As for the Lenovo Tab M10 5G powered by the Snapdragon 695 SoC, which competes with the OnePlus Pad Go, it achieved relatively higher scores.
Apart from some minor issues with the OnePlus Pad Go, such as noise in images and average camera quality, I didn’t encounter any major problems during my week of using it.

As long as you stick to tasks like reading, mild gaming, and watching movies, the tablet performs well. It is also possible to do some office or school work by connecting a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, but it’s important not to expect too much. The two 8MP cameras are decent for video calls and quick photos, but there is noticeable noise in the images even under good lighting conditions. In low-light situations, the noise becomes even more pronounced.

I appreciate the streamlined software experience of the OnePlus Pad Go due to its reduced number of pre-installed apps. It comes with OxygenOS 13.2, based on Android 13, and guarantees two years of updates. While some multi-tasking features, such as the two-finger swipe to split screens, are borrowed from OPPO, they function seamlessly. I particularly like the taskbar at the bottom of the screen for quick access to my favorite apps. However, certain popular OnePlus smartphone features like Zen Space and Canvas AOD are absent. The strength of the cellular network will vary depending on the location. I personally used an Airtel connection and encountered no issues as long as there was coverage. Although you can make calls, this aspect still has some bugs. I believe that support for 5G could have given the OnePlus Pad Go a competitive advantage.

Battery life

The OnePlus Pad Go is equipped with an 8,000mAh battery that supports 33W charging. It takes approximately two hours to reach a full charge using the included charger. During my review, I found that 30 minutes of charging resulted in a 30 percent increase in battery levels.

Although the charging speed may not seem impressive, what’s great about the OnePlus Pad Go is that it can easily last for two days even with heavy usage. This includes activities such as using a high refresh rate, watching movies, playing games, and reading. To put it into perspective, I was able to binge-watch five 40-minute episodes of Guns and Gulaabs on Netflix, and the battery only dropped by approximately 20-30 percent. The total on-screen time came out to be around 10 hours.

Verdict

If you are in search of a tablet for school or college-related tasks, I would recommend opting for a laptop that falls within the price range of Rs 30,000.
