About GSET
The Government of India, in a notification regarding pay scale reform dated 22nd July, 1988, indicated that a candidate to be appointed as a teacher assistant/lecturer, in addition to the prescribed essential educational qualifications, must have passed a comprehensive test specially organized for this purpose, and the same candidate would be eligible for appointment as a teacher assistant/lecturer. Will be considered suitable for UGC has recommended introducing this test as a first step to become a teaching assistant/lecturer after getting guidance from state education secretaries and higher education experts.
For this purpose, the UGC has organized a test for the eligibility of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Teaching Assistant / Lecturer on 24th December 1989 and 29th April 1990 in the subjects of Humanities and Social Sciences including various languages. Joint UGC – CSIR test was organized by CSIR on 31st December 1989 for the eligibility of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Teaching Assistant / Lecturer. This test was asked from time to time by the UGC to the State Governments and Union Territories that they would independently organize any other test or implement the UGC / CSIR test. If they accept the option of taking their own test at par with UGC and CSIR, then that test should be recognized by UGC. In its meeting held on 25th May, 1990, the commission decided to form a UGC committee to conduct official tests to be conducted by state government committees and union territories. This committee was named U-CAT.
