Chandrayaan 3 Sleep Mode – Pragyan Rover Sleep Mode, Wake Up Time & Expectations

Chandrayaan 3 Sleep Mode- The Chandrayaan-3 lunar lander and rover from India have completed their primary missions and are now preparing for the approaching two-week lunar night. According to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the two recognizable spacecraft may awaken when the sun rises once more over the south pole of the moon. The Chandrayaan-3 mission studied the possible location for frozen water deposits that could be trapped inside permanently shadowed craters for a little under two weeks.

It was also the first successful landing in the southern lunar zone and India’s maiden lunar landing attempt. According to an ISRO release on Sunday, September 2, the Pragyan rover from Chandrayaan-3 had completed its missions and had been “set into sleep mode” with its scientific instruments turned off. An energy-saving sleep mode will be included in the future Chandrayaan 3 lunar mission by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

Chandrayaan 3 Sleep Mode

After a safe landing on the Moon, Chandrayaan 3 has finished its planned missions, including observations and analysis. The original finding was made by the ChaSTE payload on the Vikram Lander. Chandrayaan 3 not only finished all the tasks on time, but considerably beyond everyone’s expectations. On September 4, 2024 , ISRO announced that Chandrayaan 3 (the lander and rover) is in sleep mode. Furthermore, ISRO has all the data that Chandrayaan 3’s several payloads gathered. The data from the Pragyan Rover has been successfully sent back to Earth via the Pragyan Lander.

Non-essential systems and operations are momentarily turned off or put into a low-power state during the power-saving condition known as sleep mode. Chandrayaan 3 will be able to preserve battery life and increase its operating life on the lunar surface by incorporating a sleep mode. For missions that call for extended periods of data gathering or observation, this is especially crucial. Chandrayaan 3 will advance our knowledge of the moon and its geological characteristics by maximizing scientific output and overall success, according to ISRO’s intelligent power management strategy.

Chandrayaan 3 Pragyan Rover

The expedition lasted for around one lunar day. The Chandrayaan 3 lander and rover should thus awaken before the next morning, according to ISRO. The Pragyan Rover was located within the Vikram Lander. After landing, the Pragyan Rover was let loose to investigate the Moon’s surface and carry out its responsibilities. The Pragyan Rover left the Lander on August 24 to settle on the moon. The Pragyan Rover’s two main payloads are APXS and LIBS. The LIBS payload discovered sulfur on the lunar surface, and the APXS discovered additional trace elements.

Pragyan Rover Sleep Mode

After successfully finishing all of their assigned missions, the Pragyan Rover and the Vikram Lander went into sleep mode. One of the objectives of the Chandrayaan 3 mission was to demonstrate roaming on the lunar surface, but as we all know, this has already been accomplished. While moving, the Pragyan Rover kept achieving its objectives. The Pragyan Rover had a 50-watt output and weighed around 26 kg. The Pragyan Rover also has a smaller construction and is lighter than the Vikram Lander. It merely had a few functionalities as a result, allowing it to successfully do its responsibilities.

As a result, the rover can only communicate with the Vikram Lander. After gathering and analyzing data, the Pragyan Rover talked with the Vikram Lander and delivered it its results. Following data collection by both modules, contact with the Vikram Lander was used to send the data to Earth.

Pragyan Rover Wake Up Time & Expectations

According to ISRO, the Pragyan Rover will awaken on September 22. Payloads on the Pragyan Rover are no longer in use, and the battery is completely charged. The solar panel will be ignited when the sun rises once more, which will most likely be on September 22. Even though most of Chandrayaan 3’s equipment have been turned off, the receiver is still active.

The following tasks will be completed by the Rover and Lander once they awaken on September 22. It is planned that the Vikram Lander and Pragyan Rover will undertake more observations and analyses using their varied instruments and payloads. However, only the ISRO is authorized to divulge detailed information on the impending assignments.

Chandrayaan 3 Objectives

The Chandrayaan 3 met all of its goals on time and showed that it was competent in all areas. Some of the objectives Chandrayaan 3 has achieved are the ones listed below:

  • August 23 – Accomplished a soft landing.
  • August 24 – Took its first walk on the Moon.
  • August 27 – Completed its 1st observations
  • August 28 – Sulfur was found, according to measurements taken in-situ by Rover.
  • August 30 – Rover found a few insignificant components.
  • August 31 – Both ILSA and RAMBHA-LP succeeded in their goals by monitoring movements close to the landing site and measuring the near-surface plasma content, respectively.
  • September 4 – Entered the Sleep Mode

Conclusion

Chandrayaan 3 the Indian lunar mission, has a unique feature called Sleep Mode. This mode allows the spacecraft to conserve power and extend its operational life during periods of inactivity. When in Sleep Mode, non-essential systems are shut down or put into a low-power state, reducing the overall energy consumption of the spacecraft. This is particularly important during long transit phases or when the spacecraft is not actively performing scientific experiments or maneuvers. By utilizing Sleep Mode, Chandrayaan 3 can optimize its resources and ensure that it remains operational for longer durations, increasing its chances of success in exploring the lunar surface and gathering valuable data about our celestial neighbor.
