Whether you are a seasoned rider or a beginner, the Benelli Imperiale 400 BS6 is a reliable and versatile motorcycle that will exceed your expectations.

I’ve had the Benelli Imperiale 400 for about six months now as my constant companion. What’s more, in these 180 odd days, the Imperiale and I have for the most part filtered through the roads of Mumbai, invested most of the energy in the popular Palm Ocean side street, and did two or three intra-city outings to Pune. Yet, 200kms is the most extreme one-way distance the Benelli Imperiale 400 had seen. I wanted to ride it for a longer distance before returning it because its time in the BikeWale Long Term fleet was coming to an end. Therefore, my road trip in the Benelli Imperiale 400 was mostly unplanned, just like the majority of memorable road trips.

Best things in this Bike

I was immediately amazed by the Imperiale’s halogen headlamp’s spread and intensity as we approached the dimly lit highway. In both low and high beam modes, the unit provides excellent visibility. I was able to ride a little faster because the visibility was the best, so I could get there before the city and its constant traffic got going. The Imperiale 400 effortlessly maintained a cruising speed of between 100 and 110 kilometers per hour. It did so without a whimper or vibration. The Imperiale continued to accelerate ahead at a top speed of 120 kilometers per hour as I tightened the throttle. Albeit the bicycle felt a piece fretful, it never took steps to leave my hands numb with the buzz of vibrations.

Also, in my experience with the Benelli Imperiale 400, I have consistently respected the capacities of its 374cc engine the most. It has sufficient torque in the lower and middle ranges to please Royal Enfield aficionados and enable it to overtake vehicles, as well as credible power in the top range for riders who would enjoy spirited highway riding. And perhaps most importantly, it does it all with the fewest vibrations possible.

Things I Don’t like it

The engine is a beauty, but the clutch pull is too much for the smooth transmission and needs to be improved. However, the clutch was the least of my concerns on my 1200-kilometer road trip. Or it would be if I could concentrate on something other than my uncomfortably sore backside.

The seat’s shape is the root of everything. Despite its apparent spaciousness, the seat’s design slopes somewhat downward. As a result, whenever I applied the brake, I would slide forward, which is not the most pleasant sensation. Then, there is the seat’s padding that is firm and resolute. I ended up expecting to stand up or stop practically every 120kms for some help.

The rear suspension made things even worse. Presently, the prior night beginning the excursion, I dialed down the preload to make the ride a piece milder. This made the highway’s small bumps and joints bearable, but the larger, squat bumps were a nightmare. I had to either slow down or get up on the pegs because the feedback from each undulation was so jarring to the spine. Albeit, the front end is far more malleable and works effectively at retaining knocks.

The Benelli Imperiale 400’s engine shined on the ghats, but its performance was hampered by its suspension and excessive weight. On straight highways, the Imperiale’s weight is manageable, and you’ll get used to it on twisty roads as well. However, it would be a long way from tomfoolery and nearer to battling the bicycle into corners.

Mileage

The speedometer stayed between 100 and 110 kmph for the 600 km to Goa, with a few bursts to 120 kph on the highway. The Benelli Imperiale 400 achieved a respectable 33-35 kilometers per litre here. It dropped to 30 km/h as we entered the ghats and the city. On the return 600km leg, I scarcely pushed the bicycle over 100kmph and it returned 37kmpl. Not bad at all.

Conclusion

Benelli called to illuminate me that they had at last found a fix to the sitting issue (the bicycle naturally fired up to 3,000rpm and, surprisingly, remained there for a couple of moments on occasion!). The fix was quick and easy, taking less than ten minutes. The Imperiale 400 suddenly became so much more pleasurable after an ECU flash that was also performed on all BS6 versions brought the idle speed down to 1500 rpm. The throttle and gear changes became much smoother, there was less brake pressure, and the fuel economy improved.
