ASUS ROG Flow X13 Review 2024: Hands Down The Best Portable 13-inch Gaming Notebook

ASUS ROG Flow X13 Review 2024: With the new ROG Flow X13, ASUS adds another weapon to their arsenal of excellent gaming laptops. The 2024 model is the company’s third edition of their small and light 13-inch 2-in-1 ultra-portable gaming laptop, and it is better than ever. Apart from slight cosmetic changes, it is equipped with the most recent AMD and Nvidia CPUs. There’s also a new display, a larger track pad, and, you guessed it a higher price.

ASUS continues to use a strong magnesium alloy chassis with beautiful matte black tones all around. It is nearly 3mm thicker than its predecessor, measuring 18.75mm at its thickest point. Despite this, the laptop manages to keep its weight under 1.30kg, making it one of the lightest gaming laptops on the market.

ASUS ROG Flow X13 Review 2024

We reviewed the ASUS ROG Flow X13 around two years ago and loved it. With its own GPU enclosure named the XG Mobile, the company tried something new in the thin-and-light gaming laptop category, and it proved to be rather popular. ASUS has released the Flow X13 2024 model, which includes Ryzen 7000 series CPUs and NVIDIA RTX 40-series GPUs. Is the laptop a better buy than its predecessors, or has ASUS abandoned the Flow X series? Continue reading my review to discover out.

By removing the bottom panel, you may gain access to the internals, which include the 75Whr battery, two cooling fans, and dual heat pipes. A detachable Wi-Fi/Bluetooth card and a 2230 PCIe Gen 4 M.2 SSD are also included. Unfortunately, memory is not user upgradeable because it is soldered to the mainboard, and changing the SSD may be difficult due to restricted alternatives in the 2230 size format.

Design & Build

The new Flow X13, like previous generations, is a solid-looking 2-in-1 convertible with a glossy touchscreen display that can rotate back all the way. There are some nice modifications worth mentioning. The ribbed texture on the lid is unique, and the triangle ROG insignia in the bottom corner, rather than the rectangular badge, looks clean and simple.

For I/O, there’s a 3.5mm combo audio jack, an HDMI 2.1 port, a Type C USB 4 port with DisplayPort and power delivery support, a Type-A USB 3.2 Gen 2 port, and the proprietary ROG XG Mobile interface. Which includes a secondary USB Type-C port with USB 3.2 Gen2 speeds and DisplayPort 1.4 support. A microSD card reader is also there. Which is probably unneeded, and ASUS should replace it with a full-size SD card reader. There is additional bottom ventilation for air intake, and hot air is expelled through vents on the left, right, and underneath the display.

Display

The touchscreen display’s size and aspect ratio have not altered, so you get a 13.4-inch panel with a 16:10 aspect ratio. Instead of 4K, ASUS is introducing a UHD+ (2,560 x 1,600-pixel) resolution option this year. That seems like a good compromise, as 4K seems overkill for a screen this size. There is also an FHD+ (1,920 x 1,200-pixels) option, although ASUS has yet to launch it in India.

The display, which now bears the ‘ROG Nebula’ moniker, has a maximum brightness of 500 nits, a contrast ratio of 1200:1, and Dolby Vision HDR support. It’s not as bright as the ROG Nebula HDR mini-LED we saw on the ROG Zephyrus M16 2024 because it’s a normal IPS LCD. Nonetheless, it functions admirably.

There is also up to 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut compatibility, a fast 165Hz frame rate with 3ms response time, Nvidia G-Sync, and Pantone validation for accuracy. Like other ROG notebooks, you can use the Armoury Crate software to swap between multiple colour mode presets and even manually adjust the colour temperature to your satisfaction.

Touch response is precise, and pen input means you can write, draw, or doodle with a stylus. I thought the display to be suitable for the majority of use situations. The video content looks fantastic, and the display is appropriate for casual photo and video editing. Because of the glossy nature, there will be reflections, but overall, I was pleased with the brightness capabilities. In terms of gaming, it delivers everything, including a rapid refresh rate and response speed. I had no tearing thanks to G-Sync, and most games appear visually amazing and sharp.

Keyboard & track pad

The keyboard hasn’t changed all that much since last year, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing because it was already rather nice. It does appear to be shifted closer to the display in order to create room for the trackpad. Which is now 56% larger than the previous generation. Although the single-zone white LED backlighting does the job. I wish ASUS would work on making it more uniform and possibly adding RGB colour options in the future. There are additional keys on the top for volume control, microphone mute, and a dedicated key to activate Armoury Crate, as seen on most ROG gaming laptops. These four keys can be used as macros and are completely customizable.

The typing experience on the keyboard is fluid and flawless, which is impressive for a laptop with such a slim chassis. The 1.7mm key travel distance and nice clicky feedback are both really gratifying. The trackpad is also faultless, with accurate touch sensitivity, good left and right-click buttons, and a smooth glass feel that allows you to easily glide your fingertips.

The power button is something I absolutely must discuss. ASUS continues to place it on the laptop’s side rather than on the keyboard. While I understand the idea, the fact that it is flush with the body of the laptop makes it incredibly cumbersome. I was constantly running my finger up and down the right edge of the laptop to turn it on. When logging into Windows, though, the embedded fingerprint scanner performs admirably.

Performance & software

The ROG Flow X13 2024 boasts the best performance package on a 13-inch Windows 2-in-1 notebook, thanks to AMD’s Ryzen 7000-series mobile processor, specifically the Ryzen 9 7940HS. The chipset is based on the Zen 4 architecture. Which has 8 cores, 16 threads, 16MB of L3 cache, and boost clock speeds of up to 5.2GHz. The processor supports DDR5 memory and contains AMD Radeon 780M integrated graphics with a customizable TDP of 35-54W.

The laptop also includes 16GB of dual-channel LPDDR5 RAM. As previously said, it is soldered, hence no additional RAM may be added. A 1TB PCIe Gen 4 2230 SSD serves as storage and can be replaced out in the future. The discrete GPU is the only difference between the two models available in India. This laptop is available with either an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 or an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060, both of which have a TDP of 60W (45W+15W Dynamic boost).

In my testing, I discovered that the laptop provides outstanding performance for everyday productivity tasks. I had no problems opening numerous Chrome tabs, watching video material, editing articles, checking emails, and editing photographs. The fans are generally silent unless the CPU or GPU is taxed, and you can experiment with different performance settings using the Armoury Crate software.

I ran a slew of stress tests on all of the hardware to see what type of performance this tiny and light laptop could deliver. As an aside, I changed the performance mode to Manual to achieve the most CPU performance and changed the MUX setting to use only the discrete Nvidia GPU.

Battery life

By far the finest battery life for a gaming laptop is provided by the ROG Flow X13. This makes it appropriate for someone who requires a dependable notebook that lasts all day and can provide adequate grunt for gaming once connected to a power source. This is due in part to AMD Ryzen 7040 series processors based on the 4nm Zen 4 architecture. ASUS has also raised the battery capacity to 75WHr, up from 62WHr last year. Despite its small size, the charging brick receives a boost from 100W to 130W.

The ROG Flow X13 scored an amazing 10 hours 45 minutes in PCMark 10’s Modern Office battery assessment, and in my experience, I was getting anywhere from 8 to 9 hours of backup, which is ideal for all-day work. Of course, if you decide to play some casual games while on the go, your mileage may vary. I’d also want to point out that, in addition to lowering the display brightness and refresh rate and setting the power mode to Silent, you can totally disable the discrete Nvidia GPU by utilising the built-in MUX switch.

The laptop’s starting price of Rs. 1,79,000 includes an NVIDIA RTX 3050 GPU. You must pay Rs. 1,84,990 for the model we evaluated.
