President Murmu appoints new Governors in 13 states

President Murmu appoints new Governors- On Sunday, the Centre appointed six new governors, including Justice S Abdul Nazeer, who retired from the Supreme Court just five weeks ago but was a part of the historic 2019 Ayodhya verdict. In addition, the Union government reorganized seven state governorships and appointed four BJP leaders to various Raj Bhavans.

The Center accepted Bhagat Singh Koshyari’s resignation as governor of Maharashtra and sent opposition leader Gulab Chand Kataria to Assam as the exercise’s high point. With elections to key civic bodies, including Mumbai, in the works, Koshyari had become a liability due to his controversial remarks about Chhatrapati Shivaji. The infighting among the party’s top state leadership in Rajasthan, where Assembly elections are scheduled for November, will be alleviated by the departure of 78-year-old Kataria from Jaipur.

President Murmu appoints new Governors

A spokesperson for the Rashtrapati Bhavan claims that President Droupadi Murmu accepted R K Mathur’s and Koshyari’s resignations as lieutenant governors of Ladakh and Maharashtra, respectively. Ramesh Bais was appointed governor of Maharashtra after keeping the Hemant Soren-led Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-Congress coalition on edge as governor of Jharkhand. Koshyari said last month that he had told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he wanted to quit and that he wanted to spend the rest of his life reading, writing, and doing other things.

This put him in the crosshairs of the opposition because of his comments about Chhatrapati Shivaji. In September 2019, Koshyari, 80, assumed office as governor of Maharashtra amid political unrest in the state following the Shiv Sena’s break with the BJP. He had several encounters with the MVA government led by Uddhav Thackeray, such as when 12 members of the state legislative council were appointed from the gubernatorial quota, which he never approved. He had been accused of acting in a partisan manner by the MVA. Following Koshyari’s description of Shivaji as an “icon of olden times,” opposition parties demanded his dismissal.
