The teaser transports us to a small island in the Black Sea, where Dafoe’s character is leading a quest to capture a fearsome, mythical creature known as Ochi. However, as Zengel’s character discovers, Ochi is an innocent, adorable animal with whom she can converse. She then flees her home, while Dafoe’s character, convinced that Ochi has taken their daughter, pursues them alongside Woldhard’s character.

A24’s next big release could be its prettiest ever. The first trailer for The Legend of Ochi, a fantasy adventure with an adorable monster to rival Grogu, has been released. While it appears to be a fairly standard “kid befriends mysterious creature” scenario, the film does contain some intriguing elements, including not just the titular critter, but also what appears to be a post-apocalyptic fantasy atmosphere.

The Legend of Ochi Release date 2025
The Legend of Ochi will premiere in US theatres on February 28, 2025. It is unclear if the film will also be released in the UK and other international markets, but we will provide an update once we receive more information.
Story
The upcoming A24 indie fantasy adventure film introduced a monster that appears disturbingly similar to Grogu, AKA Baby Yoda-slash-“Gremlins” character Gizmo, as a pivotal protagonist in the coming-of-age story. After directing music videos for Björk, Grizzly Bear, Dirty Projectors, and Kanye West, writer/director Isaiah Saxon makes his feature film debut with “The Legend of Ochi”. Saxon is also a co-founder of the animation studio, Encyclopaedia Pictura.

Helena Zengel plays Yuri in The Legend of Ochi, a young girl who discovers and befriends a newborn ochi. Zengel’s second major Hollywood film follows her leading performance alongside Tom Hanks in 2020’s News of the World. The Plot

Despite his debut as a feature director with The Legend of Ochi, Isaiah Saxon is already well-known in the filmmaking world. His work in music videos and short films, particularly the 2008 Björk: Wanderlust music video, which he created as part of the Encyclopaedia Pictura partnership with Sean Hellfristch.
He was designated one of Filmmaker’s Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film and a Sundance Fellow in 2018. The Legend of Ochi is produced by Saxon and executive produced by the Russo brothers (Joe and Anthony Russo), well-known for their roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The production company Neighbourhood Watch is also participating in the film, with Traci Carlson.

The film’s producers include Saxon and Encyclopaedia Pictura, Neighbourhood Watch’s Traci Carlson and Richard Peete, and Year of the Rat’s Jonathan Wang. The Russo Brothers, Mike Larocca, and Angela Russo-Otstot of AGBO, as well as Louise Lovegrove and Alex Plapinger, will serve as executive producers. “The Legend of Ochi” was initially announced in 2021.
