Design

The Sonos Era 300 has a unique design that distinguishes it from other smart speakers on the market. Despite its unconventional appearance, this design has functional benefits which will be discussed in detail later. The Era 300 has a compact shape with an oval front and back panel. The speaker is large and eye-catching wherever it is positioned. You have the option to place the Era 300 on a table or purchase a stand separately, with the stand priced at an additional Rs 17,999.

The Sonos speaker is made of plastic and is available in white and black colors. We got the black version to review, and it appears to be well constructed. The front of the speaker has a slightly curved grille with Sonos branding that covers ‘Custom waveguides’, promising a wide soundstage and a tweeter aligned in the center. Surrounding the edges, there is another grille that contains two high-performance woofers, a pair of tweeters, and an upward-firing tweeter.

The setup is powered by Class-D digital amplifiers to enhance the sound quality. The top of the Era 300 has touch controls for music playback and track changing, which are quite responsive. It also features a finely crafted recess for adjusting the volume, as well as built-in microphones for voice commands. On the back panel, there is a Bluetooth pairing button, a voice command toggle, and a few ports for power and a Type-C connector.

Features

The Sonos Era 300 may not impress you with its features, but it does not compromise on essentials. This intelligent speaker easily connects wirelessly to any device via Bluetooth v5, offering a good range. Alternatively, it can be linked using the Type-C Line-in port, although the adapter must be bought separately. The Sonos Line-in Type-C to aux adapter can be purchased for Rs 2,200 on the official website. Additionally, for Apple iPhone, Mac, and iPad users, the Era 300 also enables AirPlay 2 for streaming high-resolution audio from supported platforms without disruptions from calls and notifications. This feature is accessible through a shared network, supported by Sonos Wi-Fi 6 connectivity.

The Wi-Fi connection enables users to enjoy spatial audio using Dolby Atmos tracks. Unfortunately, this feature appears to be restricted to iPhone users who have Amazon Prime Music and Apple Music. Additionally, although the Era 300 functions as a multi-channel speaker, it necessitates another speaker from the same series or an Arc/Beam (gen2) to deliver a surround sound experience, a potential essential for certain users.

However, the audio quality of the Sonos Era 300 is impressive, as detailed below. It is important to mention that the speaker is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Sonos’ own voice assistant, offering limited features and accessible in English and French only. Alexa provides a broader range of functions for smart home control, operating smoothly and responding accurately to commands even from afar. Additionally, there is an option to deactivate the feature when necessary.

App support

The Era 300 sound system, like other Sonos products, can be seamlessly managed through the user-friendly Sonos app. This application is accessible for download on various platforms, including Android mobile phones and iPhones. Despite some initial loading delays with the older version v16.1, the app remains intuitive and feature-rich. Users can enjoy a plethora of services through the app, such as Sonos Radio and popular streaming platforms like YouTube Music, Apple Music, Amazon Prime Music, and Spotify.

Furthermore, individuals have the flexibility to personalize the speaker’s audio output by adjusting its EQ settings directly within the app. One standout feature of the Sonos app is Trueplay, which allows users to optimize the Era 300’s audio performance based on the room’s acoustics. Initially exclusive to iPhone users, Trueplay has now been extended to Android users as well. By utilizing the phone’s microphone, Trueplay analyzes the room’s sound profile and tailors the audio output for an enhanced listening experience.

Moreover, in addition to optimizing audio settings, users can utilize the Sonos app for various functions such as setting up stereo pair groupings with compatible devices, connecting a subwoofer for added bass depth, and toggling touch controls on or off. The versatility and user-centric design of the Sonos app contribute significantly to enhancing the overall user experience with the Era 300 sound system.

Audio

Sonos suggests positioning the Era 300 with a minimum 1-inch gap from the wall and ensuring an 8-inch clearance on all sides. This setup is vital to prevent any direct hindrance to the emitted sound. Following this, the speaker can be adjusted to its environment using Trueplay technology for the best possible experience. Trueplay significantly enhances audio quality, resulting in a richer and crisper sound output from the Era 300.

I mainly listened to music via the YouTube Music app. The Era 300 speaker performed excellently with all types of songs, adjusting the EQ settings to suit my preferences and ensuring a balanced sound. Whether playing ‘Waiting on the World to Change’ by John Mayer or ‘It’s the Time to Disco’ by Shankar Ehsaan Loy, the speaker flawlessly reproduced the music, making each instrument clear and the vocals crisp.

Although the Era 300 may not fit the mold of a typical party speaker, it can reach surprisingly high volumes for its compact size and plays bass-heavy tracks like ‘Unbothered’ by Navaan Sandhu and ‘Levitating’ by Dua Lipa with a punch that will get you moving. Testing out Apple Music’s spatial audio with Dolby Atmos tracks, I noticed a significant difference in sound quality within a standard-sized room. A song like ‘Challa’ by Rabbi, a favorite of mine for years, sounds more impressive and enchanting than ever through the Era 300. The speaker truly submerges you in the music, providing an engaging listening experience. Due to the limited selection of Dolby Atmos tracks, I didn’t feel a strong fear of missing out when returning to my usual music streaming app, YouTube Music.

Verdict

In India, the Apple HomePod (2nd generation) and Amazon Echo Studio are top choices for spatial audio speakers featuring Dolby Atmos, priced at Rs 32,900 and Rs 22,999. On the other hand, the Sonos Era 300 is available for Rs 54,990, positioning it as a premium option with advanced features and exceptional audio quality, making it one of the finest speakers I have encountered.

While the bulky design may not appeal to everyone, the Era 300 impresses with its exceptional sound quality, especially when using Trueplay tuning. It offers clear vocals, distinct instruments, and powerful bass that cater to a wide range of music genres. Moreover, its connectivity options for Android and iOS devices add to its versatility as a smart speaker. Despite some drawbacks like the need for additional speakers for certain features, a slow app, and limitations on spatial audio, the Era 300 is a formidable competitor in the wireless smart speaker market, making it a compelling choice for those willing to invest.
