Early Life
Shubman Gill was born on September 8, 1999, into a Punjabi Sikh family in Fazilka, Punjab, India. His father, Lakhwinder Singh, a farmer with dreams of becoming a cricketer, recognized Shubman’s early interest in the sport. Picking up a bat at just three years old, Shubman demonstrated considerable promise, prompting Lakhwinder to train him by bowling 500 to 700 balls daily. In 2007, to enhance Shubman’s training opportunities, the family relocated to Mohali, close to the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium.
At the age of twelve, Shubman’s talent caught the eye of former Indian bowler Karsan Ghavri, who recommended that he attend the Under-19 all-India pace bowlers’ camp. Facing U-19 bowlers in the nets led Ghavri to urge the PCA to include him in Punjab’s U-14 team. During an Inter-District Under-16 match against Amritsar, Gill scored an impressive 351 runs, sharing a record opening partnership of 587 runs with Nirmal Singh. At just 14 years old, he also made headlines by scoring a double-century on his Under-16 debut for Punjab in the Vijay Merchant Trophy.
