Through The Royal Conservatory of Music’s curriculum, she took voice, classical guitar, and piano lessons at the Maritime Conservatory of Music. She started a rock band called The October Game when she was 17 and was still a student at Queen Elizabeth High School in Halifax. The band only lasted a few months. The independent Flamingo Records release Out of the Fog and the CD Out of the Fog Too both feature one of the band’s songs, “Grind,” which is credited as a group composition. It has not yet been distributed elsewhere.
Sarah McLachlan Jowett offered McLachlan a recording contract with Nettwerk, a Vancouver-based independent record label, after The October Game opened for Moev at Dalhousie University. Before McLachlan moved to Vancouver and began a new life as a recording artist, her parents insisted that she finish high school and complete one year of studies at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. After two years, she finally signed with Nettwerk without having written a single song. A mutual acquaintance introduced her to her birth mother when she was 19 years old.
