History

The Palakkad Fort was constructed in 1766. The first few years of the construction process are poorly documented. It is thought to have been built by Paliyath Achchan, the local king, who only became an independent monarch at the end of the 18th century. When he asked Hyder Ali to help him defend against an invasion, Hyder Ali took advantage of the situation to take control of the Palakkad fort. The fort remained under Mysore Sultans’ control until 1790.

After several back-and-forth battles over the fort between the British and the Sultans, Colonel Stuart took it that day. Under the English rule, the stronghold was remodeled and utilized as an activity base till the mid nineteenth hundred years. It was later made into a Tehsil.

The fort went unnoticed until 2004, when it was taken over by the Archaeological Survey of India. When the ASI took over, the war memorial was a falling, decaying, and damaged structure. You can learn about the fort’s history in the museum on the grounds, which has undergone a fascinating renovation process. History buffs will find the museum’s diverse stories and rich history to be an engaging way to spend an afternoon.

Palakkad Fort this historic fort in the center of Palakkad is one of the best preserved in Kerala. It was worked by Hyder Ali of Mysore in 1766 and later dominated and adjusted by the English in 1790. The Archeological Survey of India now cares for it.
