History
The history of Murud Janjira fort goes all the way back to the 15th century, when some Rajapuri fishermen built a small wooden fort they called Medhekot on a huge rock in the sea to protect themselves and their families from pirates. However, Ahmednagar’s Nizam Shahi Sultan wanted it to be one of his strongholds because, first, of its vast area and, second, of its strategic locations.
Malik Ambar, the Abyssinian regent of Siddi descent and administrative spokesman for the Sultan, ordered the construction of a rock fortress in place of the wooden garrison after a general named Piram Khan had captured the fort in accordance with the Sultan’s wishes. The fort was renamed Jazeere Mahroob Jazeera after Burhan Khan, Piram Khan’s successor, carried out extensive renovations to create an impregnable structure. The modern name Janjira comes from the Arabic word Jazeera, which means island and refers to the island’s offshore location. Murud is a Konkani word, likely alluding to the Shahi of Ahmednagar.
Over the course of its history, the Maratha, the Portuguese, and even the powerful British attempted to breach the Murud-Janjira fort’s walls, but were unsuccessful. As a result, the fort stands as an unconquered one. In order to establish a Sultanate of Janjira, the Siddi rulers grew so powerful here that they resisted every attack and defied the sovereign.
Structure
With the exception of a few ruins inside, the fort, which was last renovated at the end of the 17th century, still retains most of its significant fortifications.
