Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani was born on April 19, 1957, in Aden (now Yemen) into a Gujarati Hindu family. He is the son of Dhirubhai Ambani and Kokilaben Ambani, with a younger brother, Anil Ambani, and two sisters, Nina Bhadrashyam Kothari and Dipti Dattaraj Salgaonkar.
Ambani lived briefly in Yemen before his father decided to return to India in 1958 to launch a trading business focused on spices and textiles, originally named”Vimal” but later rebranded as “Only Vimal.” The family resided in a modest two-bedroom apartment in Bhuleshwar, Mumbai, until the 1970s. Although their financial situation improved upon returning to India, Ambani lived in a communal setting, relied on public transport, and did not receive an allowance. Eventually, Dhirubhai purchased a 14-floor apartment building named ‘Sea Wind’ in Colaba, where Mukesh and Anil lived with their families on separate floors.
