Mohit Raina was born on August 14, 1982, into a Kashmiri Brahmin family. He grew up in Jammu and was the son of P.L. Raina and Sushma Kumara. He attended Kendriya Vidyalaya School in Jammu and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in commerce from the University of Jammu. Mohit moved to Mumbai to start a modeling career. In order to participate in the 2005 Grasim Mister India modeling competition, he lost 29 kilograms (64 pounds) from his adolescent weight of 107 kilograms (236 pounds). He hoped that modeling would provide him with a path into the workforce. Mohit Raina came in first place out of the top five competitors in that competition.

In the television serials Devon Ke Dev Mahadev and Mahabharat (2013 TV arrangement), Raina played the lead role of the Hindu god Shiva. Mohit Raina also appeared in the television series Bandini (NDTV Imagine). Ganga Kii Dheej, a show that aired on Sahara One in December 2010, chronicled the hardships of young single girls in a village called Kaliganj in rural West Bengal.
