About Manmohan Singh
Manmohan Singh is an Indian politician, economist, academician and bureaucrat who served as the Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014. He is the fourth longest-serving prime minister after Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Narendra Modi.
Early Life And Education
Manmohan Singh was born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, Punjab, British India (now in Punjab, Pakistan), to Gurmukh Singh and Amrit Kaur, in a Sikh family. His mother passed away when he was very young, and he was raised by his paternal grandmother, to whom he was very close. He began his education in an Urdu medium school and, even later as Prime Minister, wrote his Hindi speeches in Urdu script, occasionally using Gurmukhi, which is the script for his mother tongue, Punjabi.
Following the Partition of India, his family migrated to Haldwani, India, and in 1948, they moved to Amritsar, where Singh attended Hindu College. He later enrolled at Panjab University in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, where he excelled in Economics, earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in 1952 and 1954, respectively. He completed his Economics Tripos at the University of Cambridge in 1957, where he was a member of St John’s College.
In a 2005 interview with British journalist Mark Tully, Singh reflected on his time at Cambridge, crediting his professors Joan Robinson and Nicholas Kaldor for awakening his understanding of the political dimensions of economics. He noted that Robinson inspired critical thinking and a conscience in her students, while Kaldor’s pragmatic approach significantly influenced him. After Cambridge, Singh returned to India and became a teacher at Panjab University. In 1960, he pursued a DPhil at the University of Oxford, where he was part of Nuffield College. His doctoral thesis, supervised by I.M.D. Little, focused on India’s export performance and laid the groundwork for his book, “India’s Export Trends and Prospects for Self-Sustained Growth.”
