About Madras High Court

India has a high court cry out the Madras High Court. It has appellate jurisdiction over the unification territory of Puducherry and the state of Tamil Nadu. is the 3rd oldest Indian high court, after the Calcutta High Court in Kolkata & the Bombay High Court in Mumbai. It is in Chennai. One of four charter high courts accepted in the four Presidency Towns of Madras, Bombay, Allahabad & Calcutta by letters patent granted by Queen Victoria on June 26, 1862, is the Madras High Court. The court compound is one of the largest in the world, second only to the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom and it covers 107 acres.

In addition to exercising original jurisdiction over the city of Chennai, it also has extraordinary original jurisdiction over civil and criminal matters under the letters patent and special original jurisdiction over the issuance of writs under the Constitution of India. The High Court comprises of 74 adjudicators and a central equity. The Supreme Court of Madras was opposite the Chennai Beach railway station from 1817 to 1862. The High Court was also housed there from 1862 to 1892. On July 12, 1892, the present buildings were handed over to Chief Justice Sir Arthur Collins by the Madras Governor at the time, Beilby, Baron Wenlock.
