Career
Mittal purchased the state-owned steelworks of Trinidad and Tobago in 1989, which were losing a lot of money. He turned them into profitable businesses in a year. Up until the 1990s, the family’s primary assets in India were a cold-rolling mill for sheet steel in Nagpur and an alloy steel facility near Pune. Lakshmi is not a part of the family business, which is currently run by his younger brothers Vinod and Pramod Mittal and includes a large integrated steel factory close to Mumbai. Lakshmi has no say in the business. Mittal purchased the Irish Steel facility in Cork, Ireland, from the government in 1995 for a pittance of just one Irish pound.

It closed in 2001, six years after opening, displacing approximately 400 employees. Criticism has been directed at the site for environmental issues that have since emerged. The Irish government tried to get the High Court to rule that Mittal’s company should pay for cleaning Cork Harbour, but it was unsuccessful. The cleanup was estimated to cost €70 million. Mittal rebranded Ispat Mexicana and Ispat Karmet, his Kazakhstani business, prior to December 2001. Ispat Sidex became the new name he gave to Sidex Galati, which he had purchased in November 2001.
The LNM Group successfully completed the 155 million US Doller transaction to free the Romanian government from control of the steel assets Siderurgica Hunedoara and Petrotub Roman the day after acquiring the PHS Steel Group from the Polish government, which included Huta Sendzimira, Huta Katowice, Huta Florian, and Huta Cedler. In 2006–2007, Mittal successfully attempted a hostile takeover of Arcelor, resulting in the company’s rebranding as Arcelor Mittal. He became the owner of several steel companies as a result of this, including Usinor in France, Arbed in Luxembourg, and Aceralia in Spain.
