Kolkata Metro 4 Operational Lines & 45 Stations
Kolkata Metro, with four active lines and 45 stops, is an urban mass rapid transport system that serves Kolkata and its surrounding suburbs. Line-1 construction began in 1972, with the first 3.40-kilometer segment between Esplanade and Netaji Bhavan opening in October 1984, making it India’s first metro system. Additional sections were opened between 1984 and 1995, bringing the total length of the line to 16.45 kilometres. Following the success of the Delhi Metro’s Phase 1, another push in the mid-2000s extended Kolkata Metro’s Line-1 by 10.94 km to New Garia (Kavi Subhash) Station.
Ministry of Urban Development
Line-2, which connects Salt Lake Sector V to Howrah Maidan and runs 14.67 kilometres east-west, began construction in 2009. Initially overseen by the Ministry of Urban Development, the project was ultimately moved to the Ministry of Railways. The first segment of Line-2 opened on February 13, 2020, with the remaining portion (Howrah Maidan to Phoolbagan) planned to be operational in 2023. The Union Railway Minister declared in the 2010-11 railway budget that new lines would be built from New Garia to Joka, Dakshineshwar, Barrackpore, Barasat, and the NSCBI Airport (Biman Bandar), increasing the Kolkata Metro network.

History Of Kolkata Metro
The British Legislative Council met in Shimla in September 1919 to discuss the construction of a railway line in Kolkata. A committee, led by W. E. Crum, was formed to investigate this plan. The projected metro line will connect Bagmari in the east to Benaras Road in the west via a tunnel under the Hooghly River. This line was scheduled to be 10.4 kilometres long, with a fare of three annas (0.1875 rupees). Additionally, Harley Dalrymple-Hay proposed a north-south link in 1921. However, both projects required more finance than the imperial government could afford, thus they were not pursued.
