Indra Nooyi Wiki: PepsiCo’s chief executive officer is Indian-American business entrepreneur Indra Nooyi, who previously held the positions of chairperson and CEO. She consistently topped the list of India’s most powerful women. Indra Nooyi also works for the Amazon Boards and the International Cricket Council. Indian-born American businesswoman Indra Nooyi was instrumental in the profitable reorganization and diversification of PepsiCo, Inc.’s brands. She was born on October 28, 1955, in Madras (now Chennai), India. Nooyi held the positions of chairman of the board and CEO of the business from 2007 to 2009.
Nooyi graduated from Madras Christian College with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 1976 and the Indian Institute of Management in Calcutta with a master’s degree in business administration two years later. She went on to earn a master’s degree in public and private management from the Yale School of Management in 1980 after moving to the United States. Nooyi worked as a consultant for the Boston Consulting Group for the following six years. Later, she held executive positions at Motorola, Inc., as well as the engineering company Asea Brown Boveri, which is now ABB.

Nooyi was appointed senior vice president of corporate strategy and development at PepsiCo in 1994. She was made the company’s president and chief financial officer in 2001. Nooyi was in charge of leading a significant restructuring that saw the company spin off KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell into Tricon Global Restaurants, which later became Yum! Brands, Inc.), in addition to the spin-off of PepsiCo’s bottling division. She also oversaw the Tropicana Products acquisition in 1998 and the merger with the Quaker Oats Co. in 2001 as part of the company’s strategy to diversify into healthier drinks and foods.
In October 2006, Nooyi was named CEO, and the following year, he also became chairman of the board. Nooyi was the fifth chairman and CEO of PepsiCo in its 42-year history. She was the company’s first female CEO and one of only 11 female chief executives of Fortune 500 companies. Although some analysts were surprised by the timing of Nooyi’s appointment as chairman—her predecessor, Steven Reinemund, had only been in the position for five years when he suddenly decided to retire—many of them praised the skills she would bring to the position.
