How to Build a Mousetrap Car? Full Guide

Build a Mousetrap Car – These mousetrap car plans were created for use with 4-H clubs in my home state of New Hampshire. I prefer these plans due to their simplicity and adaptability, even though there are numerous other excellent mousetrap car Instructables and videos out there as well as designs for cars that travel farther and faster. It is a fantastic project for 4-H or a class that gives students a chance to learn some fundamental physics and engineering skills.

A mousetrap car is a great vehicle for a fun weekend activity, physics experiment, or science project. Many teachers transform the experiment into a long-distance challenge when using mousetrap cars to teach students about mechanical advantage, distance, and gravity.

How to Build a Mousetrap Car?

In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to build a mousetrap car using simple and easy to find materials. This fun and creative project is perfect for kids of all ages and can be completed in just a few hours. Once you’ve finished the project, you’ll have a unique and fun toy that you can use to play catch or race against your friends. So read on to learn how to build a mousetrap car and have some fun in the process!

The kinetic energy that propels the car you’ll build transforms the mousetrap’s snapper arm’s spring’s stored potential energy. However, you will need the appropriate materials, an understanding of a few physical principles, and some effort to construct your very own rodent roadster. Mousetrap cars that move at a slower rate and produce less energy will use less energy to travel further because there will be less resistance to their movement from friction. The power output is decreased by larger drive wheels and longer lever arms. extra tip: Mousetrap cars that move slowly use the most energy.

How to Build a Mousetrap Car? Full Guide

Building a mousetrap car is a fun and easy project that can be done in just a few hours. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the entire process, from sourcing the parts to assembling the car. We’ll also provide tips on how to make your mousetrap car even more effective and challenging for the rats (or anyone else) who try to steal your food! Whether you’re looking for an easy way to entertain yourself or you want to teach your kids about science and engineering, building a mousetrap car is a fun and simple project that’s sure to please.

Materials

  •  2 pieces of Cardboard (4” x 10”) many dimensions will work, but this is a good starting place.
  • 4, DVD’s (old used ones work great or new black ones from an office supply store)
  • 4, 1/4L (19/32”) Beveled Faucet Washers (found at most hardware stores in the plumbing dept.)
  • 2, 3/16” Dowels – 6” long (these will need to be longer if you use wider pieces of cardboard)
  • 1, ¼ inch dowel, 10“ long
  • 2, Straws
  • Tape – Masking & or Duct
  • zip ties (an assortment of 4” & 8” works well)
  • String
  • Hot Glue

Car Body

Cut a rectangular notch about 1″x2″ in the middle of each of the two pieces of cardboard that are approximately 4″x10″ each. Check to see that the notch edges meet. After that, tape the edges of the two pieces of cardboard together to form a single double-thick piece of cardboard. Check that the notches are aligned.

Attach the Straws

As shown in the illustration, cut three sections of straw to fit on the car’s body. Use hot glue to secure them. This will be the car’s underside. Make certain that the leading (short) edge of the cardboard and the straws are parallel to one another.

The Mousetrap

Take a mousetrap and take out the parts that make up the release trigger (the bait holder and the wire bail, as shown in the picture). The 14-inch dowel should be fastened to the snap arm with two or three 4” zip ties before being reinforced with hot glue or tape. Using hot glue, secure the mousetrap to the car’s topside in the direction of the front. Make sure that the dowel is pointing away from the cardboard notch and that it also lines up with the notch’s center when pulled back.

For placement, see the image at the top of the instruct able. Using a zip tie, tie a piece of string to the end of the 14-inch dowel. On the rear axle, it ought to reach a little longer than the hook. Attach a tiny loop to the end. The hook on the rear axle should be just reached by the loop.

Preparing the Wheels

Cover the hole in the middle of the DVD with duct tape. Place the faucet washer in the middle of the DVD and adhere it to the tape by turning it over. Apply plenty of glue to secure it in place. Do this for each and every wheel.

Adding the Axles and Wheels

Press the wheels onto each end of the straws after inserting the 3/16″ dowels. It may be challenging to press the hubs onto the dowels at times. This can be made simpler by rounding or slightly sharpening the ends. You should test the car to see if it rolls straight at this point. If not, the straws may need to be positioned correctly.

Attaching the Hook to the Rear Axle

Cut a zip tie that is 4 inches long and fasten it to the axle’s center, which will be visible through the cardboard notch. The string’s hook is here. It can be held in place with a dab of glue.

You’re Done

Now you should have a vehicle that looks like the picture. Wind the string backwards after attaching it to the hook. When you place the vehicle on its side and let go, it should begin to roll away from you. Spend some time getting to know your vehicle. To get it to roll straight and smoothly, it will probably require some tinkering and practice. Once you have it working properly. You should run it a few more times, and as it goes, pay close attention to it to see if anything is preventing it from functioning properly. Examine your options for making it work better. Once you know how the car works, see if you can make another car that can go further. Try a variety of materials for the body, axles, wheels, and other parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you set up a mousetrap for a mousetrap car?

When the mouse trap is in the fully wound position (as shown below), the lever arm's tip should fall directly above the drive axle for optimum performance. Energy will be wasted off the start if the mouse trap is not aligned properly with the drive axle.

How to make a fast mousetrap car?

Increasing the length of the lever arm attached to the mousetrap increases the overall mechanical advantage of the vehicle, if you haven't noticed yet. As a result, you may shorten the length of the lever arm attached to the mousetrap in order to boost your vehicle's speed.

What is the fastest mousetrap car design?

Doc Fizzix designed the Speed-Trap Racer after his own record-setting mousetrap racer, which traveled 5 meters in 1.2 seconds.
