Design

The Haier 65S9QT QLED TV stands out as a beautifully designed television with a sleek and stylish appearance. It features a metal frame that results in slimmer bezels around the screen compared to TVs with plastic frames. The TV includes a prominent chin at the bottom covered in navy blue fabric, providing a contrasting touch. This chin area also showcases the Haier branding, as well as the Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision logos.

The rear panel is constructed from plastic and features all necessary ports for linking external devices. Although the wall-mounted stand is not provided, the TV comes with a sophisticated table stand consisting of two slim metal rods and a metal bridge. This stand is sturdy enough to support the 19.7kgs TV and has anti-skid grips on the base for added stability.

Display and audio

The Haier 65S9QT presents a variety of premium QLED TV display features. The 65-inch screen supports Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10, and HLG video formats. It includes 4K HDR, 400 nits brightness, a 7,000:1 contrast ratio, and a refresh rate of up to 120Hz with MEMC. Although not flawless, the overall viewing experience is impressive. The display offers vivid picture quality, strong contrast, and rich colors in various lighting conditions. Dolby Vision IQ adjusts the display quality based on room brightness for an optimal viewing experience. The difference is subtle, with colors appearing more vibrant in darker settings than brighter ones.
I watched some of my favorite TV shows and movies on the device, and let me say, watching Ford vs Ferrari on the Haier 65S9QT was more exciting than on other devices I’ve used. The visuals were detailed and well-calibrated, especially during challenging lighting situations. However, streaming darker content like Sherlock and Dark Matter may not be as satisfying on this TV, despite its Dolby Vision and HDR features. An OLED TV could be more suitable for such content.
Gamers will appreciate the Haier 65S9QT panel, offering a 120Hz refresh rate for enhanced video frame rates. While lacking 4K gaming at 120Hz like other QLED TVs, this smart TV provides an enjoyable experience with UHD resolution. Playing games like Dirt Racing 5 and FIFA 23 proved engaging, with smooth transitions between bright and dark scenes due to the TV’s local dimming technology.
Regarding the audio, the Haier 65S9QT QLED TV features 30W stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos. The speakers, certified by dbx-tv, are placed behind the display to elevate the listening experience. While the sound is clear, it may seem lacking for a 65-inch screen, especially in a combined living and dining area. The audio didn’t have the fullness and engagement I expected. Sports content is decent, but movie and TV show dialogues lack clarity. Despite having various audio modes for enhancement, it is advisable to invest in a premium soundbar or external speaker setup for a truly immersive sound experience.

Remote control and connectivity

The Haier 65S9QT QLED TV comes with a Bluetooth-compatible remote that adds to its premium design with a metal frame. This remote offers an extended range for easy control from afar and includes more buttons compared to some recent TV models from other companies. It comes with a circular dial for easy navigation and quick access buttons for popular OTT platforms such as Netflix, YouTube, and Amazon Prime. Additionally, it provides specific buttons for Google Assistant, selecting sources, going back to the home screen, returning to the previous page, controlling media, adjusting audio settings, and managing general settings, among other features.

The volume control and mute button are located on the right side of the remote, which may take some time to adjust to. Although the remote appears satisfactory overall, the color choice is my only concern as the silver shade tends to get dirty quickly. Additionally, a joystick located at the back of the unit on the right edge can be used to control the TV.

The Haier 65S9QT comes with various connectivity options typical of a smart TV. It includes dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 4 HDMI ports with 4k resolution and 120Hz refresh rate, 2 USB 2.0 ports, LAN, headphone jack, video/audio input, antenna/cable, and optical output for speakers.

Performance and software

The Haier 65S9QT, powered by Google, comes with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. In my assessment, its performance was consistently smooth, providing seamless animations when navigating the user interface and opening applications. Despite a slight delay in app loading times, everything operated smoothly without any instances of apps freezing or crashing.

The user interface resembles other Google TVs, displaying tailored content on the main screen from various OTT platforms based on my preferences. An active Google account is necessary to enter the app store and install extra applications. While this setup seamlessly syncs your preferred content across devices for a smooth viewing experience, it also poses a challenge. Unlike smartphones or laptops, TVs are considered communal devices. The Haier 65S9QT TV was situated in my dining area and utilized by other household members.

Although individual profiles can be established, my less tech-savvy parents might unknowingly use my profile, affecting the content suggestions. It would have been beneficial to have a feature to secure profiles with passwords. It’s important to note that Google TV provides a settings lock feature and allows users to disable content recommendations. Additionally, a password is required to switch from a child’s profile to an adult user profile.

However, the Google TV OS also has some advantages, including Chromecast, which enables you to wirelessly cast photos, videos, music, and other content from your Android smartphone to the television screen. Moreover, it features a built-in AI Google Assistant for voice-controlled functions like searching for shows and adjusting the volume. I faced some issues like the television losing Wi-Fi connection during streaming, but this was resolved through a software update.

Conclusion

The Haier 65S9QT QLED TV is indeed a premium choice at Rs 92,990 in India, offering top-notch features for an immersive viewing experience. However, for those looking for more budget-friendly options without compromising on quality, there are several 65-inch TVs available from reputable brands like Sony, Samsung, Hisense, and Vu. One noteworthy contender is the OnePlus Q2 Pro, which provides a compelling alternative to the Haier QLED TV at a competitive price point. Priced as low as Rs 69,999 in India, the OnePlus Q2 Pro offers a range of advanced features that enhance the overall TV viewing experience. With powerful 70W speakers, a high refresh rate panel of 120Hz for smooth motion handling, Dolby Vision support for stunning visuals, and a user-friendly Google TV interface. The OnePlus TV delivers exceptional value for its price.

When comparing TVs in this segment, it’s essential to consider factors such as display quality, sound performance, smart features, and overall value for money. Each brand brings its unique strengths to the table, so consumers should assess their preferences and requirements to determine the best choice for their home entertainment setup. If you seek a television with a modern design and impressive viewing quality, the Haier 65S9QT QLED TV offers an attractive option. With Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10 compatibility, and a high refresh rate, it provides vivid images and seamless motion. Despite this, its sound quality may not completely align with its expansive screen. Nonetheless, given its comprehensive performance and features, it stands as a strong contender in the high-end 65-inch QLED TV category.
